I have never used a blaster, but i understand why some people do,
Re your lighting control, you will find with the new remotes the IR output is so high you can control your lights if the dimmer is in the same room, i do this with my Lutron graphic eye, the grafic eye is behing me in my lounge and yet it still responds o the IR commands even when its pointing the other way :)
