I need to control just two devices (for now): a projector and a Denon X3300W receiver, both located behind me and without line of sight. I'd like RF (or WIFI?), and a remote with physical buttons. Macros and/or PC programming would be nice. Budget is ~$600, which I expect is plenty for my simple needs.

Long ago I enjoyed the URC MX-500. Now I'm looking for a new remote. I see the MX-850 is the successor, but I've read a lot of people have problems obtaining the software to program it. Do I really need the software? Can I program it without a PC by pressing the buttons on the remote, as I did my MX-500? I never used codes, I always recorded the IR code for each button manually so I have full control over what each button does.

The MX-850 look is maybe a little dated, but I guess battery life is nice. The MX-890 and other URC remotes look a bit more modern. I haven't yet looked at other brands. Do you have any suggestions?

The MX-850 is very old, but still a capable remote.

You *do* need the software to program it, and the issue with the software is the remote needs a serial (RS232) port for communications, which is no longer current technology and isn't included on much. There are USB/Serial adapters, which can work, but not all do and some have difficulty with them.

If you can afford it, URC's newer remotes with USB will be less of a hassle, but you have to buy from a dealer who will bundle the software (it's not included nor required to be included).

Beyond URC, for a computer programmable remote you'll pretty much be stuck with a Harmony!
