I need a universal remote to control a Sony TV, Energy sound bar and Xfinity X1 platform cable box. This one must have a sleep timer and must be backlit. No other requirements - any idea what would be a good choice. I got a 4-device OFA and cannot get it to work with the xfinity cable box.

Finding remotes with sleep timers is difficult. Which OFA remote do you have? The setup code for Xfinity X1 is Cable 1982, which is only built into fairly new OFA remotes. However, we may be able to upgrade your remote by modem or by using a <$10 USB to serial cable.

The OFA we got is OARUSB04G.

Edit - I tried 1982 and it worked (mostly). Thanks. The FF and rewind buttons are not working but everything else is - mute, last, guide, menu, vol, ch change.

Can I "learn" the sleep timer from the original sony tv remote? Will I have to "learn" the FF and rewind functions from the Comcast remote?

I appreciate your help.

This project on Kickstarter looks promising. Its called spin remote. Has no buttons at all. Its like a floating dial. If you are looking for simplicity this might work.

FF and REW are long presses on that model. Give it a try before attempting learns.

Should be no problem learning Sleep.

I misunderstood what you meant by sleep timer-- I though you wanted a remote which itself has a timer.  To add to mdavej's comment, if you do learn the FFWD and REW functions, the IR command will be sent on button release, so it won't persist for very long.  If you want to have these signals continue while you speed through material, hold the button and the IR signal will start after about 2 seconds.

It is fine to learn the additional commands, and it is also possible to program in signals even if you don't have the OEM remote or want to access a function not included on the OEM remote
