Hi ... I just bought a second hand Denon AVR-4306 but the remote control is missing. My doubt is which remote control to by now…. A replacement remote (Denon RC-1024) or a universal one? And …which one??

My main concern here is if a universal remote would be able to control the AVR function of switching from one device to another (i.e. from dvd to sky or to a playstation) and if it would be able to control the main settings (direct mode, dolby digital etc..).

Also as I do not have the original remote …will the universal remote learn anyway??

Which one would you recommend???

Thanks for your help here…

The Denon AVR-4306 is supported in the URC database and any of their pc programmable remotes will allow for discreet input switching. What's your budget?

In the USA, the Denon remote costs $110-$120, and it undoubtably will provide the best operation of the 4306.  www.usa.denon.com/ArchivedAVReceivers.asp  has a list of all the functions the remote can perform, and the associated codes.  I count roughly 120 functions using the Denon IR protocol.  I think it is unlikely that you will find any universal remote which supports all of the functions directly.  Probably some programming will be required.

Even $20 universal remotes can control the 4306, but such remotes won't have a button labeled, for example,  "Dolby",  or "Rear channel volume", etc.   A touchscreen remote which is highly programmable can probably provide a reasonable user interface, but I suspect the cost will be much higher than the Denon remote, which is also touchscreen.

Among cheap universal remotes, those made by UEI (typically sold in Europe under the brand name OneForAll) are the safest bet, because any of those manufactured in the last 2 or 3 years can control every function of the 4306, using setup code 1360, either out of the box, or by user programming, without needing to learn from the original remote.  [I can provide the details if you are interested.]  But unless you only want to typically control a few functions, I think it will be very hard to remember which buttons are associated with the functions.  Actually I find that I rapidly become satisfied with a particular setup of a receiver, and then I only use a few functions, like volume and input selection.

I think you'll be happiest withth Denon remote, unless you plan to use a universal remote to control other components.

Hi JoeFlabitz and 3FG.. thanks for coming back to me quickly….

My best option would definitely be to purchase a Denon original replacement and it was actually my original thought as I saw them on internet at affordable prices (the same you saw 3FG) but I live in Italy and I already checked with those companies and they do not ship outside US/Canada…. Hence my question… and my doubts… my budget is around $150 may be a bit more…

Like 3FG said once the system is set up I do not need to play too much with the remote. The functions I normally use are: volume, switch from different sources and control them (mainly playstation 3 sky) and select the mode once I am using a source: i.e music -> direct mode; movie Dolby Digital or different one. Apart from this I won’t need to play around with the remote too much…

The other point is, will I be able to set up the Av receiver without the original receiver … in other words.. can set it up from the main dashboard?

If you know a site that ship in Europe at reasonable price I would buy an original one… if not I can purchase a replacement one that will just do the job…. What do you think?

Any model you can suggest?

Cheers
