This is a high end (expensive) system that has not been purchased yet and the manual does not give any help with control. I've controlled many Denon pieces in the past, but am a bit nervous about specifying this if I can't get info on the protocol first. An inquiry to Denon just referred to a 3rd party controller for the HEOS system. I don't need the HEOS, so that doesn't help.

Denon publishes their serial/tcpip commands in documents like this:

Unfortunately, they can be somewhat hard to find; and in the short time, I did not find any document officially supporting your device. However, experience has shown that the commands do not change that often.

I have a Denon AVR-A100 myself, that I can control over serial (RS232) with a GlobalCache serial port, using this homemade (unfortunately museum ripe): [Link: github.com]

Does this help?

Thanks for responding. Yes, I have an AVR-988 and its serial documentation is very similar to what you linked to. I don't think I have seen any receivers that differ much from that, but with the addition of HEOS, I'm a little concerned.

I'm controlling my AVR-988 via IR, but I do happen to know that they have made changes to that protocol as I recently needed to program a controller for a Denon X3700H in a museum installation that replaced an earlier model. There were no open RS232 ports available so I needed to stay with IR. The older model matched the IR of my Denon. The new model did not. So that becomes part of my concern that they have made some overall changes.

I suspect the lack of documentation comes with the fact that we are dealing with the consumer division. My experience has been primarily with Denon Pro.

They can be a little difficult to locate, and in the brief time I searched, I was unable to locate any documents formally endorsing your equipment. Experience has shown us that the orders don't change all that frequently.
