I was wondering if by replacing just one of my regular 3-way wall switch (in a room where there are 2 wall switches controlling the same light)with a X-10 3 way switch, will I able able to control the light remotely with the 4040 X-10 controller?
I thought I heard somewhere that a master and a slave switches are needed. If that's the case, does a 3-way X-10 wall switch set contain both the master and slave switches?

You'll need to replace the slave switch also if you want local operation AND be able to control the switch with X-10 commands. X-10 packages the slave and master switch together. Robert RCI Automation rciautomation@compuserve.com[Link: ourworld.compuserve.com]

What if don't replace the slave switch. What would I not be able to do, if anything? That's because the second switch is a different kind of switch, where I can control the light, the ceiling fan speed and direction. If I were to replace that switch with the X-10 slave one, I would loose all these commands.

Fernando, As long as you don't use the slave switch, everything should work fine. BTW, there are paddle style X-10 slave switches available in different colors if they go better with your other switches. Robert RCI Automation rciautomation@compuserve.com[Link: ourworld.compuserve.com]
