IR 543 "lock up" problem

I recently added an X-10 IR 543 tranceiver to my home theater setup. The unit is working fine during the evening, but during the day it seems to lock up (the light on the front remains on, and the buttons don't respond). If I place my hand in front of the IR sensor, the unit is fine again. I searched dejanews for this unit, and it seems that several other people have had their 543's "lock up". What should I do to minimize this? The room is pretty bright during daylight hours, but there is no flourescent lighting or anything. Thanks!

Your IR543 could be getting to much direct sun light and interpreting that as an IR signal. As long as it receives what it thinks is an IR signal, the red LED will stay lit and it will continuously transmit a X-10 signal on your power line. If you find that it does not do this when it is dark, then the solution is to move it out of the light.

If it does this while dark also, you should exchange it because it is defective. Some units have a defect that locks on the LED all the time until it is unplugged.

Yeah, it doesn't seem to happen at night at all. And during the day I don't have to unplug it to reset it, just covering up the sensor is fine. Why would it try to do IR at all when I use the buttons on the unit itself? The room is curtained, but it is still very bright. I'd like to be able to keep the unit out so that I have access to the controls on top.

I think you have a defective unit. The IR sensor is over sensitive to light.

To answer your question, the IR543 only sends X-10 power line signals. When you press the buttons on the top of it, it sends a X-10 signal down your home's AC power line. The LED lights up when you do this and this is normal.
