IR extender wire

Thanks in advance, and sorry if this is the wrong place for this question. But if i want to "add wire" to an existing IR repeater, (to reach a projector, for example) can I just cut the wire, and splice in any 'ol wire? Like spare speaker wire or something? Thanks!
