I am planning to start using with X-10, mostly to control lights in my house. Where do I start? What do I need to buy? I would like to have the capability to expand. Are there articles (or books) on this subject?

I own an HTM MX-700 remote control.

Please advise. Thanks.

Buy these items from www.x10.com web site or the ones mentioned below
IR543 - This device will receive a signal from your IR remote control and convert it to X10 protocol. Therefore, you can turn on and off lights
LM465 - Lamp module: plug your lamp into this module, set the address and you can turn it on or off using your remote control
Wall switches: go to www.homeautomationnet.com or www.smarthome.com for a vast selection.
For your MX700, you need to set up code for X-10 under AUX and assign it to one of the devices. Also go to Home Theater Master forum for more info on how to use MX700 for X-10 devices. Have fun!

You're complaining about having to spend $23 to be able to automate your lights? That is such a good deal it's rediculous. Lutron IR controlable dimmer switches are $50-$60 a per switch. With X-10 your looking at $23 for the controller (Only need one) and $12.99 for each switch location.

As far as the lamp module goes, I would recommend the LM14A module instead. It is a 2-way module that remembers it's last dimmed setting, and instead of comming on full bright all the time, it will start dim and brighten to its last setting in 2 seconds. It's good for bedrooms and places like that. It is a lot more expensive though.

If $23 is too much you can get it for $19.84 at this link:

The IR543 doesn't program anything. It received IR commands from your remote and transmits X10 commands over your powerline.

Yes...with the IR543. Easy way to explain it. Your LM465 is an illegal alien hired for one job and that is to control your lamp. The only problem is he only speaks and hears x-10 language. Unfortunately your remote doesn't speak that language because it can only speak IR. So what do you do? You hire a fulltime translater to translate what your remote is saying into x-10 language so Mr LM465 does his job. Even if you bought the firecracker remote, it still will not work. The firecracker remote speaks RF (which is still not x-10), and the IR543 can't translate RF because his parents didn't pay enough for multilingual classes. So if you were to use a fircracker remote, you would need Mr.TM751-HA Wireless Transceiver Module to work as the translator for that remote. You also can't teach commands from the firecracker to your rm av3000 because they both only speak and learn their own language. Does that make sense now?

I feel sooo stupid because I am new at this.
Im sorry,
So you are saying there is no way to use my rmav3000?

From what I have been reading I can use the IR543 to program my rmav3000 to work with the Lamp Module (LM465)

You can but not without help. First of all, you need the commands in it. If you don't already have them you'll need to get a remote that has them in it and teach your remote (Note the remote will have to be an IR remote) RadioShack sells a "One For All" that does this and you could technically buy one, teach your codes and return it. Some people think thats wrong, and others do it all the time. I'm not condoning it, just throwing out ideas. So say you do that...now you have the IR codes in your rm av3000 that will control your x-10 equipment but only with the aid of the IR543. The IR543 is a controller that tells the x-10 equipment what to do. But it listens to IR. So when you press "Lights On' on your remote, the IR543 sees that and tells the lamp modules to turn on. X-10 modules are usless withought a controller telling them what to do. I have 3 controllers on my system right now. The IR543 translates my remote which speaks IR, the TM751-HA translates my keychain remote which speaks RF, and I also have a CM11A connected to my PC to translate commands sent from my PC.

You only need one IR543 for each location you want to use an IR remote in. If a module in another room won't respond, you need either a filter on a noise-producing appliance or a coupler/repeater to strengthen the signal's reach.

Tryn swapping modules just to eliminate a defective one as the problem.

I want to put a lamp module up stairs and downstairs and controll it with my rmav3000, but I believe for it to work the av3000 has to be pointed at the ir543?
