I'm looking to pick up a controller unit (543) and two outlet lamp modules (and maybe an appliance module. Where do you recommend I go for them on-line? Considerations: Price, shipping time and Customer Service. Thanks for your recommendations.

Scot,

www.smarthomeinc.com has good prices and great service.

www.worthdist.com also has a good price, don't know about the service...never tried them.

I went to both sites and got totally frazzled. I guess I don't know exactly what I need. I will probably order from www.worthdist.com because they are in the same state as I am (PA). I just want to be able to control (1) wall switch with a couple of lamps plugged into it and (2) outlets directly (with no wall switch) into which I am going to plug a lamp into each. Could you help by telling me exactly what I need to do this and roughly what I should find as an acceptable price?
Thanks,
Scot

Here's a suggestion...

Order the Firecracker kit from X-10. It includes:
  • Transceiver
  • PalmPad Remote
  • Lamp Module
  • Firecracker interface for computer

    Also order:
  • Add'l Lamp Module (overstock price $7.36)
  • 2-way Wall Switch (overstock price $7.36)

It should probably cost you around $22 with shipping.

If you want to use an existing programmable IR remote, you would have to get the IR543, otherwise the included PalmPad works great.

If you want to do a few more hardwiring projects, you can always replace your outlets with X-10 wall receptacles. They sell one model where the top outlet is X-10 controlled and bottom is always live, or another model where both outlets are X-10 controlled.

Also, please note that the Firecracker kit is not "upgradable". You would have to buy the complete ActiveHome kit if you decide you want to do timed lighting and macros.

Overstock items @ X-10 found here:

    Hope it helps...
