Hi There;

I am extremely new to the x-10 biz here, and I am wondering what I need to start a simple system in which I can control a couple of lights from my programmable remote (Take Control). I have heard talk of the IR543. Is this and a couple of x-10 light controllers all I need? If so, where in Canada can I get this type of equipment? I have seen Plug 'n' Power equipment at Radio Shack but the local staff are not quite that helpful. Thanks for your help.

If all you will be doing is controlling lights by remote, you really don't need the computer interface (available in the ActiveHome kit). The minimum requirements for remote operated lights would include:

- transceiver (receives RF signal from remotes, trnasmits to modules)
- X-10 compatible remote (PalmPad, Slimfire, etc.)
- X-10 module (lamp, appliance, etc.)

To use a programmable IR remote, you would also need the IR543.

I have seen 3-piece kits (transceiver, remote, lamp module) sold at stores like Lowes and Radio Shack. But you would probably just be better off buying a Firecracker kit for $5.90 (this includes shipping) from the X-10 website. This kit includes these 3 items plus the firecracker unit for the computer.

Take a look at the link below for a well written explanation about X-10 by Chris Couture.

Thanks for your help!

All I'm really looking for is to be able to set up a macro through my Take Control remote that would dim a couple of lights when I am to start a movie. I think I got it now.

Regards,
Rick
