Pleasew excuse me if anyone has placed this question before. I have just bought the pronto remote and i think it is great. I have read most info on the x10 but i cant seem to find an answers to my questions.
"What type of ceiling fans would i need to use with the x10? Do i need to buy one with a remote?
Since it is connected to a wall switch, do i need to get a fan with one of those elobrate controls for the wall switch?
Any info would be appreciated.

You can do it several ways. I had an IR controlled fan at my condo and it worked nice with an IR remote. I learned the IR into a RC2000 Marantz and it worked fine. No X-10 required, but you had to point the remote at the fan. It was very nice but I haven't seen an IR controlled fan in a while.

You can use X-10 in a few ways on any fan. There are wall switches that are made for inductive loads. This is what you would want to use on anything with a motor if you were going to change the speed. The problem is you may get a hum from the fan motor if you lower the speed. You could use a standard X-10 dimming switch as long as you only used it for on and off controls and used the pull chain for speed (this is what I do). The best option would be to use a "relay" style switch. These are the type used for florescent lighting and high current applications. The advantage of these type switches is that they are a direct contact switch (just like a regular light switch). The only problem with them is that they will make a thud noise when turned on and off (the relay inside them). If you are not in a hurry and want to spend about twice as much on a switch, Smartlinc has just produced a Silent Relay switch. It should sell for around 100.00 or so. There are also in-line modules that you could choose from.

Regardless of the switch you choose, you will need an IR to X-10 converter. The IR543 or 4040 (same part, different number) is the cheapest and most commonly used device for doing this.

Hope this helps,
Chris Couture

Thanks Chris.
I have been looking for a ir fan everywhere. In fact from where my living room is i have an unobstructive view of the where i would place the fan. But, i ahve not been able to find an ir fan. That would be my first choice though.

Hunter makes a kit that can be used with most fan models. Here is a link...

Mr. Wizard,
Are these IR or RF controled? I beleive that Brett is looking for an IR controled fan to use with his Pronto. If you know of one that is IR controled, please list the part number.

Thanks,
Chris Couture

Both IR and RF, depends on the Kit. You can get them at Home Depot. The kind of kit will depend on what Brett wants. Remember though, This is not a Fan, but an add on kit.

As far as it needing to be IR, NO KIDDING CHRIS!!!

The web site Mr Wizard listed is a bit confusing. One product says it is RF controlled, but none admit to being IR controlled. My guess is that the ones with picture of two pieces (a wall mount unit and a hand held unit) and not RF controlled are the IR kits Mr. Wizard refers to.

Lesson? Not all web sites are well designed.

Mr. Wizard thank you for your response. I have just been to home depot. They dont have any ir kits for fans, nor any fans that are ir. Please if you have any more info let me know.

Just to add on to my last note. I emailed hunter support. All their fans and remotes, including wall switches are rf.

Brett,

I know they used to make one, because I had it at my old house. From what I remember, It was a Hunter kit. This was several years ago though.

If you do find something, let us all know though.

Reguards,
Mr. Wizard
