I know it sounds like a dumb question but I don't have the option to install a switch on two of the circuits I want to use X-10 with. Is there something that I can plug into an outlet (to be controlled via X-10) into which I could plug a lamp? Thanks for your insights.

Yes, X-10 makes a lamp module that is made for this this reason. Check it out here:

Thanks Chris!
A quick follow-up question: If those plug-in moduals are not in line of sight (1 of mine would be behind a couch, another behind an equipment rack) would it still work?

Thank you for your help.

Sure! It works using X-10 signals. X-10 signals are transmitted via powerlines not line of site. Check out the post I wrote about "The Basics of X-10"

Thanks again Chris,
OK, one last one (I did read your post and it answered every other question I had): If I use the plug-in modual in one of two outlets (in a traditional 2 outlet panel) will the X-10 only control the light plugged into it (as desired) or will it effect whatever is plugged into the other outlet as well? And BTW, where would you recommend I pick up the X-10 components on-line (best service/price?)
Thanks again,
Scot

I checked out the site you mentioned. What are your impressions on the 1050 IBM? Does the controller plug in? Is this the sytem that will work with my Pronto?

Scot,

The lamp module LM465 plugs into an outlet, and the lamp would plug into the module. So the other half of the receptacle would be free to use for something else (i.e. not X-10 affected).

Just make sure the lamp module is only used with lamps (300W or less). If you are going to plug in something like a crock pot or a small fan, make sure you use the appliance module. They look very similar, but the appliance module does not have dimming capabilities and will handle up to 500W.
