I have heard that an Inductive Dimmer switch is what should be used to control a ceiling fan. They will however generate a hum on MOST ceiling fans.

My question is, what brand, type, model ceiling fan will work with an X-10 dimmer switch but not generate hum.

The better the motor the less chance the hum will be noticeable. It’s the windings of the motor that cause the hum. It is kind of a “luck of the draw”, too of the same brands, same fan could be totally different. You may want to use a standard X-10 switch and use the pull chain to control the speed. This way you will have no noise problems.

For quiet ceiling fans, you'll probably want to consider a Hunter.
