I had the opportunity to remove a "Geek Squad"-mounted tv yesterday, and I thought I would share what I discovered underneath with my fellow custom installers. It would seem they employ a "keep drilling until you hit a stud" type approach to tv mounting. [Link: yfrog.com]

Do you mind if I use that image as a "Horror Story" install?

When at first you don't succeed, try, try,(try, try, try, try) again.

You may use the image as you see fit. Bonus points if you mention it was a rental.

I went to best buy the other day and saw the guy that used to check reciepts to make sure you don't steal in a geek squad install shirt. And one of the best av salesman I ever met as a manger of a different department. I give them 5 years then start to be in circuit city's shoes. I could go on but we all no its happening. I just hate that everytime they have a sale the tv's are cheaper than I can get it from a wholesaler.

Well duh!! Have you ever seen stud finders for sale at BB? They don't know that they exist!
P.S - I can no longer use stud finders... everytime I pick one up, the damn thing goes off!

I like how they made a big circle around the sweet spot so that they would not forget which hole to use. I think that lower hole might be a bit small for a retro ring, they probobly should have hit it with the hammer a few more times.

For the link-lazy of us out there: Looks like wood paneling under the sheetrock. That would have played hell with a basic studfinder, but it would have held a toggle bolt beautifully.

I just came from a job where the buider drill too large of holes in cinder block wall. So his alternative, toggle bolts and construction adhesive. Well they did not work. Thank god I was called in as when I looked behind TV, was hanging about half an inch off of drywall and was ready to fall on custom fireplace mantle then marble tile floor. Will have pictures later in week!
