If XP8 then you name a flag for each input/output you want to track
Set/Unset each flag as required in macros etc.
Then tie a graphic to each flag on the touchscreen that is visible when flag is set.

To have a single button change it's 'text' based on flag you need to stack buttons - one for each input - on top of each other:

Bottom Button (default) says "Off"
Button on top of that - says "Input 1" - is set to visible based on input 1 flag
Button on top of that - says "Input 2" - is set to visible based on input 2 flag
and so on...

If it's just on/off state you can either stack two buttons, say a red circle under a green circle, and set the top to visible when flag is set. Or, you can change the text color by setting the state to reversed when the flag is set.
Technology is cheap, Time is expensive.

Another variation of this which would work in the on/off scenario is instead of making the text box 'visible' on the XP-8 flag, just make a text box, click on the yellow Variable button and select the flag you want to track.  When {var} comes up, click on it and edit the text for the True and False states.  So the text is always visible, but now it displays "CD Player On" for True and "CD Player Off" for False (for example).  Or you can delete the text for the False state so that it's invisible when the flag is not set.

Either way works, but man it can get hairy working with a bunch of stacked buttons that are either invisible or 8 buttons' text stacked on top of each other.  :)

The emulator hardly works at all anymore when using 2-way devices...  No reflection on how it will actually work.
