I'm buying a new receiver, here are my selections, any comments/suggestions on which way to go? I'm looking for DTS and Dolby Digital which they all appear to have, in addition I would like future expandability. Thanks.
Technics SA-DX930; JVC RX-888VBK; Kenwood KRFV8020D; Pioneer VSX-D608; Sony STRDE835; Technics SA-DX930; Technics SA-AX7GC-K

Take a look at the new Pioneer Elite series too, several price points. You might want to check out www.audioreview.com for user-based reviews.

I have the Pioneer VSX-D608 and have been very pleased with it so far. I also believe that it has 6ch input for future compatibility. You may want to check out www.hometheaterforum.com

You can search their archives for any threads mentioning those models. I know for a fact that there have been many such "which receiver should I buy" discussions in the past few months.

odinala,

From your list, drop the Technics, drop the JVC, drop the Kenwood. Only Pioneer and Sony remains. I'm leaning toward Sony.

Good Luck...

Try looking at the newsgroup
alt.home-theater.misc.

Most of the suggestions I've heard so far are for the Denon AVR-3300, Nakamichi AV-10.

The yamahas and denons have 6-channel inputs for the future. if you are going to go with sony, i would strongly suggest you only consider the ES line. The DA333ES is the entry piece, about $750, and WAY better than the STR series.

"Sport" seems to be the only one who knows his
@#$%!!

Consider the entry level Sony ES, Yamaha 1105, or my favorite in this price range, the Onkyo 575 for about $600! It's not just about features. It would serve you well to listen and compare then.

"Polgas" stated the Denon and Nakamichi. Also very good choices but more $.

Any of the models you've listed will make you happy. I'd like to suggest you budget for some better speakers than you currently have if you want to hear a significant inprovement in the sound. I upgraded to a Dolby 5.1 receiver, but used old speakers. I was not as impressed as I thought I should have been with the new sounds. Complaining to the dealer I got my amp from, he demonstrated my amp with different sets of speakers for me. Speakers made all the difference, and with the best sounding speakers he showed me, even his lowest price amp sounded great. I now have new speakers, and LOVE listening to my new receiver.

I had a JVC 884VBK (which I just upgraded to a Yamaha DSP-A1, but that's another story) which is fundamentally the same as the 888 without the DTS. I'm sure someone will flame me for saying this, but most of the receivers in your price range sound pretty similar in stereo, DD, and DTS. JVC's receivers have tons of features (s-video switching, low impedance speaker driving capability for all channels, a lot of power, etc.) and are easy to set up and use day to day. The DSP modes on them are terrible, though. For decent DSP modes you'll have to move up to Sony's ES line or Yamaha's better models.

Good luck! Please post a response here lettting us know what you decide.

Odinala -

Tough choices. Many great products, many great deals. Try this on for size:

Yamaha RXV (as previously mentioned. Check out www.audioreview.com for ratings on their line). RXV795 can be had around $450, if memory serves.

Klipsch Quintets (energys are more musical for CD audio, but for HT, the Klipsch are the way to go), price without SW is about $375. IMHO, to get better performance, you need to push the 4-digit range. One of the best price/performance ratios out there at this time.

Hope this helps. As with any piece of audio equipment, let your ears decide!

Looking forward to hearing what you decide.
