I just got a Pioneer VSX-1121 receiver and it's near the floor and my remote (Pronto) is having a hard time controlling the receiver unless I aim it directly at the receiver. The receiver has an IR input on the back. I am looking for cheap solution to allow me to extend the IR to a better location.

You need an IR repeater system. The IR input on the back of the unit is for an IR emitter, not an IR receiver."

The manual states that if you keep your receiver in a cabinet you can use an IR receiver to control the Pioneer by using the input jack. That 2nd receiver takes priority over the front IR receiver.

In that case try an IR receiver from Niles, Xantech, or Profiecent. The tabletop model are the least expensive.

I have no experience with the following product, but I imagine it will work, and would cost very little to try.

I ordered it, from what I understand it won't work because of the stereo jack. So I also ordered a stereo to mono adapter. For $5 with shipping it's worth a try.

Hmm,
I've probably steered you wrong. In order for the IR receiver to work, it needs a source of power, a ground, and a signal lead. A stereo plug has 3 connections and can supply all of those. If the pioneer receiver only has a mono jack then the source of power (5 volts or so) is missing, and it expects your IR receiver assembly to supply the 5 volts.

Of course it is possible to hook up a 5 volt power adapter, or pull the power from a HDMI jack, but that may be more than you want to get into.

The least expensive solution would be to prop up the front of the receiver.
