Hi
I have a Sony STR DE 595 Receiver and I am trying to figure out why it goes into protect mode when using its spdif socket. The funny thing is that using an RCA connection the receiver acts fine - no protect mode whatsoever when the volume reaches it max, but when I use its spdif socket, it begins its dolby surround decode and then goes into protect mode. When using 2 channel st on its digital connection it works fine which is really puzzling to me. Any insight into why it shorts when decoding multi channel would be of great help.

Thanks in advance,

So is it tied to the input, or to the sound mode (ie. 2.0 versus 5.1)?

The first thing to check for protect mode, is to re-do all your speaker wire at both ends, to ensure there is no short from a stray strand. If this doesn't help, then the answer is likely that something has shorted out on the circuit board. When Sony receivers go, this is typically the way (I've had it happen myself).

Well its tied to the sound mode. Only when using digital signal does it short out. I have checked and double checked the system, redid the connection, but it still only shorts when using digital. This is odd to me though, why would it go into protect only when using the digital coax?

I just got through to sony, they said that there is a frequency difference between the two sources which, at higher volumes, causes the protect message. Does this make sense and, if so, is there any way to remedy this?
