Ok - seems like a dilema others might have so thought I throw this out for the masters:

* I have a Yamaha HTR-5590 Receiver. It has two Speaker areas (I.E. Speaker set "A" and Speaker set "B"). I also have a sub-woofer plugged into the, well, subwoofer output.

* Speaker set "A" is really a 5.1 system that provides sound to my TV room. It is the entertainment center speakers, as it were. Speaker set "B" is really two sets of speakers in the living room and dining room.

So, basically, when I am watching TV, I turn on Speaker A only. When I am in the living room/dining room and want to listen to music, I turn on Speaker B only. Make sense?

Ok, here is the rub: How do I make the Subwoofer ONLY come on when Speaker "A" is selected? The subwoofer is active no matter which Speaker set I have on. The problem is, when I have Speaker "B" on (I.E. I am listening to music in the living room), I can hear the woofer pounding over in the TV room. Rather than having to manually switch the woofer OFF everytime I am listening to the "B" set thought someone here might have a better solution.

I hate to say it, but you are S.O.L unless you want to go into the menu and turn the sub off when you use the b speaker, or you can negate the lfe and use high level connections to speakers a, or if you have an rs232 port on the yamaha you may be able to work around these setttings with a good PC based programmable remote. I do not work with yamaha gear, but the sub issue you are having is pretty universal among most entry/mid level consumer gear.

If you have another amp, you could use the Zone 2 outputs. This would erase this sub issue and allow you to play different material in the 2 rooms at the same time.

RCushman,

Yes, you can. I believe there are two solutions.

"Zone B"

In the setup menu under "Options", "Speakers B", you can select "Zone B" (it is defaulted to "Front"). This adjustment precisely solves your problem. I will be surprised if this feature is not available.

"Zone 2"

If you have a second amp lying around (the one you replaced the Yamaha with), you can actually enjoy TV in the main room while others listen to CD etc in the Living/dining room. Connect this amp/receiver to the "Zone 2" output on the back of the Yamaha. Read the manual or call Yamaha Tech at 1.800.292.2982 for them to walk you thru the setup. The manual has always been a little hazy.

Very nice receiver in the "Concert Series". We carry the main line of Yamaha but they are essentially the same. Our model numbers start with RX-V instead of HTR.
Manuals?! We don't need no stinking manuals! a.. er..

Great tip we discovered today.

If the Yamaha has the "zone B" capability, Yamaha has the discretes for "B on", "B off" & "A on", "A off".

This worked in an amazing way today with an MX-850/rf in a luxury condo. We inserted the "B Off" command in the "system off" macro so the client could always begin TV/Music in the main room only. Radio, CD & Music (cable box music) & FAV page has a "B On" & "B Off".

A Zone 2 amplifier is always cooler, however, the place is so small there was no need to upgrade the client's receiver to a "zone 2".

Let me know if you need the codes. They are in an MX file format.
