I've been debating about buying some higher quality video component cables from bluejeanscables.com, but I thought I'd ask around to get people's opinions on the impact of cable quality for their DVD hookup to their HDTV. I currently have a JVC DVD player with 'budget' component cables outputting to a Samsung DLP. I recently noticed that picture quality was slightly better playing DVDs though my Xbox with the component out HDTV pack and was wondering if the slight improvement was due to the cables. Has anyone ever noticed a marked difference in picture quality with higher quality component cables?

Also, with HDTV tuners, does it make that much of a difference going DVI out versus component out?

hogie,

I posted some info in another thread some time ago about my testing with DVI versus component cables. A link to the thread follows:

If you are having better luck with one set of component cables over the other, why not swap the component cables, and see if the better picture moves with the cable that you suspect to be better. If the better picture doesn't move with the cable, the cable is not the limiting factor!

Is your TV calibrated specifically to both players? You really need to do this before comparing different DVD models or wires. Usually the Xbox is not considered near the top of pic quality.

What is your budget wire? For video it isn't too hard to see differences between wires if they are not of similar construction. Or at least if one of them has poor specs for video. You can't really beat the types of cable that BJC makes, but that doesn't mean your current one is worse.

With DVI, you are skipping 2 conversion stages. To use component it has to convert digital to analog in your DVDp or HD box, then back to digital in the DLP TV. Usually one would expect that to damage the signal a bit more than the straight digital connection. But there are other issues like the sparklies you mentioned, so it is never quite so cut and dried.
