I have a Marantz DV4400 connected to my new Yamaha RX-V1500 receiver. My probem is when I select DVD as the source I get audio but no video. When I select CBL/SAT I get video but no audio. I am using component video connections from DVD to Receiver and from Receiver to HDTV. I am a beginner at Home Theater and am very frustrated that I cannot figure this out. Please help.

I get this feeling you might not have connected everyting properly. Connect the DVD into video 1 on the rear, its labelled DVD. Connect the HD cable into input 2 labelled DTV. Connect the audio into optical inputs into numbers 4 ad 5 labelled the same, DVD & DTV. Let me know.

It is possible to select a source with a Yamaha and have the wrong audio mode.

First, the receiver's display should read AUTO a few seconds after you select each device that has a digital input. If it says ANALOG and all you have is an optical cable, you will get no sound. If it says DTS and you have the right digital connection but no DTS sound track, it is again silent. Auto lets it select whatever the heck audio it is getting.

In fact, I always back up the digital connection with analog wiring just in case. I actually ran across a track on a Toshiba Demo DVD a few years ago that put out no digital signal, just an analog one! And this is of course necessary for a two-zone situation.

It might also be that you are plugged into the wrong digital input or that the digital input has been assigned to a different input via the menu.

As for no picture, you will get no picture if green is not connected properly. If only green is connected, you will get a black and white picture. If green plus one color is connected, well, you get a sense for which color is missing by the resulting color. If red and blue are reversed, the picture usually is REALLY BLUE.

Any of this hit the mark?
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Thanks for the responses. Ernie you helped me figure out what I was doing wrong! I don't know about others but to me the manual is not very detailed or clear about configuring components via the menu. ANYWAY I had the video input assigned to Cbl/Sat when it should have been DVD. I guess I thought this would be performed automatically. Whatever, now it works beautifully, and wow what great picture and sound! Thanks too for the tip about the audio connection. Right now I'm using the red and white cables for audio but I do plan on getting a coaxial for digital audio. I was unaware that you could have both types of connections at the same time. This forum is a great rescource. Thanks again for your help.

Then be sure that when you select the particular source, the Yamaha says "AUTO" after a few seconds. That means that if only analog audio is there, it will select it. If analog and digital are there, it will select digital.

If you accidentally hit the input button more than once, you will change the audio mode. If, then, for instance, you change the audio mode to DTS, you will get no audio never nohow until you put in a DTS disk and select DTS on the DVD player. If you leave the input at AUTO, it will give you sound no matter what type of input you send it.

This is selected input by input and the receiver remembers how each input was last set.

That's pretty important, that thing about not hitting the input button more than once. I have seen macros where there were more than one hit and the purpose was to be sure the input was selected but the result was that the audio mode was messed up. And differently every time!

You read the 'manual' ?

No wonder you got 'confused' !!
