So if I'm understanding all of this what I need is an SPS-600- and an SPS-5WC-. Is that correct? That will enable me to dim the ceiling lights and turn on the backlight all at once?

Andrew,
Thanks for all your help. I'm rounding up the parts and will let you know how everything turns out.

And the SPS-AS

The SPS-AS showed up today. And I noticed it is black on the back, not clear. I thought it had to be clear to get a signal from the master.

Hifiguru gave you the wrong part numbers. You don't need the SPS-5WC either. It is just an ir remote that goes in the wall. he SPS-AS is a slave switch for controling from multiple locations.

All you need is:

SPSF-S6A Switch for backlight
SPS-600 Dimmer for Room Lights

And a way to get codes into your remote if you dont use the layout thats in the mx500 already.

Let me know if you need any help.

Programing is extremely simple also. Just set both switches where you want them and then hold down one of the scene buttons on your remote until the leds on the switches flash.

Well, I don't know what to do now. I already have all the parts he talked about. Can the parts I have work?

The SPS-5WC can not be returned. Neither can the SPS-600. I actually have 2 of the 600's. But I knew I only needed one. I bought all 3 for $150 used. The SPS-AS I bought new, but wasn't a lot of money. 20 bucks I think.

I talked to a Lutron tech on the phone recently. He mentioned I need the SPSF-S6A as well. But if I am not dimming the flourescent (just turning it on or off) why then do I need the SPSF.

I'm trying to keep the cost of this project to a minimum. But it seems to be getting carried away.

The SPSF-S6A is a switch not a dimmer. You could use two of the 600s and just change your backlight.

All I want to do with the backlight is turn it on when the ceiling lights dim to off. The backlight is a 12" Flourescent with a 6500K T5 bulb. I don't really want to change that. No other light comes close to the 6500K specs.

Any ideas on what I really need to accomplish this task? The backlight will be plugged in to a switched outlet.

I've installed roughly 30,000 dollars worth of lutron equipment in the past two months. I am positive this is the route to take. If you use a dimmer on the backlight you will blow it up.
