I have a 5 or so year old receiver (sony STR-D515) that I know doesnt have all the decoders of the new stuff. The thing is its in great shape with little use and I have all the matching components
VCR, CD and DVD players

I did upgrage to a nice 5.1 set of Polk speakers that sound incredible on the reviever.
I want a decent surround system and dont know if Im missing something by not getting into a new unit.

The spec sheet for the STR-515 says it has
"3 types of surround effects"
"Dolby*Pro logic and Dolby Surround Pro Logic"

Are those really three kinds?

My main question is:

Am I missing something I need to have or can I live with this one?
I only have the 5 speakers and a sub

The room is 15x15 feet

Any help is appreciated

Surround effects ?= DSP models (like Hall, Arena, etc.)

You're missing a LOT by not having Dolby Digital or DTS 5.1. Not only are those sound formats night and day compared to Pro Logic, but the technology used in today's receivers is a LOT better than that in decade-old models (and will sound much better, assuming you get a decent model).

I'd second Daniel's suggestion. If you only had a 2.0 setup, I'd say stick with your Sony if you're happy with it, but you have the full compliment of speakers for a 5.1 setup, so I'd definitely take advantage of that with a newer receiver that has Dolby Digital, DTS, etc. Almost every modern AVR has DD/DTS, unless it's a stereo receiver.

Pro Logic and Pro Logic II are great for 2-channel sources (VHS, most TV, etc.), but I'd definitely look for something that supports 5.1, especially since you already have the speakers.

For example will the old sony I have have the same signal on both of the 2 rear speakers when the new technology has them different.
Is that the way it works

What exactly am I missing.

You are missing alot
1) Digital QUALITY audio from sources such as DVD players, satellite receivers/cable boxes (when TV shows and movies are broadcast in Dolby)

2) Discreet channel seperation.
With analog "surround, there is a true seperation of left and right only. The center and mono suround channels are completely processed from the front L and R, the frequency range of the sound is very limited, and the subwoofer output is a mix of everything.

With digital surround, each channel (front left, front right, center, rear left, and rear right) is coded completely independent of one another, providing full range digital sound from all speakers. Even the subwoofer outputs it's own seperate effects.

If you decide to do it, consult with Remote Central again after you buy. We can help make sure you have it connected and set-up for optimum performance. Good Luck
