Hello to all,

When I was buying my first universal remote, I was looking for a control of any device from one gizmo.

Now universal remotes surprise with their functions. Still, the TV-B-Gone became the leader of universal remotes sales during the last 2 weeks though it had only one function - to switch off the TV .

So , what are you looking for in a universal remote?

It's a novelty keychain-sized remote that turns off almost any TV with one button push (and 15 seconds). Plus it has the unadvertised side effect of turning *on* almost any TV with one button push. :-)

But it is definitely more novelty than remote; counting it as the "leader of universal remotes sales" is like saying "Hotwheels is the #1 selling brand of car in the US".

OK, Daniel, I agree entirely, that TV-B-Gone can't be considered a leader. :) I just was impressed with its popularity during some days. All my friends were speaking about it! And thus I decided to ask here: What people look in universal remotes? Could such companies as Philips or URC or Sony be mistaken?

Just a curiosity.

Buttons that I can feel in the dark. Enough buttons that I can control a DVD player or a Tivo easily. It's called the MX-500.

I agree with Spikey, but it is personal preference. You have two basic choices, touchscreen and hard button, or a combination of the two. Personally I hate touchscreen remotes unless you get an oh my God expensive one like the ones Crestron or AMX makes because to get the remote to respond you have to be very accurate as to where you push on the touchscreen, or it will either not do what you want, or not respond at all, and with some of the cheaper models the display is hard to see at an angle. With the hard button remotes you know what you are pushing and I just find them easier to use. My personal preference is the Home Theater Master MX-700 or 800 only difference is RF capability on the 800, but look for new models from HTM that seem to have some nice upgrades, such as the center push wheel.

Good luck

I think people don't know what they want.

Let's be honest we would all love to have a remote with one button, that is why we love macros. On the other hand what Harmony proved with the 745, if a remote is too simple it becomes an inconvenience.

I also think that people will buy any cheap crap that is sold on TV, it is the only way I can explain all those annoying infomercials.

PS as to what would be the coolest remote? as powerful (or more) as the Pronto, as easy to config as the Harmony, as cheap as a one for all and a morphelizer screen (instead of a touch screen the screen will morph - 3 dimentionalize - the buttons on the screen)

Thank you Anthony for your reply!

Tell me please what is the amount that you are ready to spend on remotes? And do you change them often?

I used to control everything with Philips Pronto TSU 3000, and when I found some bugs and after my wife offered to change home theater devices I thought of TSU 7000. But the idea of spending a cute amount of money and then quite a long period of time on programming.... Terrible :-)

The Pronto 7000 is an awesome remote, and I'd never go to anything else...yet.

An MX700 with the red, blue, green, yellow colour buttons and the record button returned. I'd buy one tomorrow.

Never thought of that one! But you are right they should add a rec button, especially with DVR's on the rise. Hey Eric J are you listening!!

not as many as the guys here. I have a Pronto TS-1000, and a Harmony 768, I had the Harmony 745 before it had a name, but when the 768 came out they offered an upgrade package and sent in the 745 and some $ for it. I was thinking of getting the TSU-7000 (worked with a few of them at work) soon, but was downsized a bit under a month ago so luxury items like remotes are off the list for now.

if you wanted mythical remotes my answer is above, for real remotes

money- One for all remote: can't beat what it can do for the cost
configurability - Pronto or HTM MX-3000: can't beat a touch screen that let's you do what you want
ease of use and good help - Harmony: most is wizards, the rest you can call or e-mail their help desk
all around - HTM MX-700/800: LCD means that you can name buttons correctly, never used them but no one is complaining about them being hard to set-up

I would not buy a remote that does not come with a cable and PC SW except if you can get a cable and PC SW from the manufacturer or a third party add-on
