Wondering what method people are using for control and disk selection of MegaChangers, preferably the Sony CX777ES. Please give the Pros and Cons for each.

What kind of control are you looking for? Try looking at escient and the nirvis slink-e.

There is a thread going in the Pronto forum on this Changer. Direct disc selection is posible through a pretty lengthy macro.

I will have only DVD's. Have looked at the Escient DVDM-100 the other option I know of is a HTPC with DVDLobby are there any other options. I would like control from and on screen display that I can program into a TSU7000 without having a button for each DVD.

A 400+ button remote would be rather unweildy, wouldn't it?

Request Multimedia's VideoRequest unit will do the trick:
[Link: request.com]
I don't know how this compares to the Escient. Anyone played with both units?

Of course this is all skating around the original question, the answer to which is of course there is not really any effective way to remotely control a mechanical changer. The Sony CX777ES is no exception as it only rates 2 stars on average in usability. Cinemars stuff is cool but if you are going to use a computer anyway, why not just toss the mechanical changer and go with the hard drives. The Sony costs what, $700.00+dollars? What does 4 - 250 megabyte drives cost these days? I think you can put about 300 DVD’s on a terabyte.

I am installing one of those tomorrow, I think its about $2200.00- $2400.00 retail

Most of these systems run about $2000.00 to $3000.00

On the other hand you can build your own system that stores DVD's also, for about $1200.00 including the computer.

What software do you use to copy the DVD's to the hard drives? I did not find any for copying to the hard drive and leave the menues in tact.

I have a Sony 300 changer and an MX-3000 remote so what I have done is made a list of my movies on a screen (with pics) then I wrote a macro that turns the player on and waits until I can hit the "list" button then teh macro "types" the disk number in and hits enter. The movie starts up. I even made a little count down timer in between during the delay that shows how much time left. It took a while to do but works really great.

There is a another option: change your remote! Try the Harmony 659 it has a on screen display for up to 400 disc for DVD or CD players. Further I believe if I read the review right you can select to play right from the on screen menu. The review is on this web sight (as you probably already know). This also seems to be the cheapest way at $200 for the remote.POE

I have decided to go with the combination of HTPC and changers. Using DVDLobby for all until/if I add a second changer, then I will add the Escient DVDM-100.

I have a ProntoPro NG which is more than capable of having the 400+ disks on the remote.

Thanks to all who responded.
