I recently received a set of Bose speakers (double cubes for front and middle, single cubes for rear). Now the problem I'm noticing is that I'm not getting the most out of them because of my receiver. I have an older Sony (STR-D715).

I am looking for a modertly priced (Maybe $300-400) Digital Dolby, surround sound etc. receiver to top off my modest home theater (including DSS).

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Take care,

Mike

There are two good receivers out there you might want to look at. The first is the Kenwood VR-309. MSRP $399, but you can probably find it in the $300-350 range. It has 3 video inputs, both composite and s-video, and it will do video switching for you. It has built in DD and DTS decoding. I got one of these a few weeks ago and it's great.

The other is the just released Sony STR-DE835. MSRP $480, but Crutchfield has it in stock for $400. Same DD and DTS decoding, but it has more inputs and outputs, as well as a DSP with tons of different sound modes to choose from. I got my Kenwood as part of a package deal, otherwise this is the receiver I would have purchased. Nothing wrong with the Kenwood, but this one just does more.

I like the Kenwood remote better, as the Sony has another one of their flip remotes that are such a pain to use. But considering where these messages are posted, you're probably not planning on using the remote it comes with anyway...

Take a look at the Yamaha RXV495. It has Dolby Digital, but no DTS (debatable whether that is even worth it). It has about 70watts RMS and is stable to 4 ohms as all Yamahas are. Something to consider since some of the other receivers mentioned, including your current one are not so well suited to that impedence and I believe that is what the Bose are usually rated at. Plus when it comes to reliability, it is nearly bulletproof like most other Yamahas. At $399 it is a steal.
