I am pondering a question of great weight, updating my receiver.

Here is the scoop. I use my home theater for movies 80% of the time and music 20% of the time. I have a Toshiba TW65H80 with color stream and dtv component inputs, a Hughes Platinum DSS reciever, Sony 850 DVD changer, Pioneer PDF 1007 CD changer, and a Denon 3600, Magneplanar MGIII fronts and Infinity surrounds/center.

I am considering upgrading the receiver to get component video switching, more power and DTS. I am planning on purchasing a DTV STB that has component out in the spring. The convience of having everything through the HT system is very appealing.

I can get the Denon 5700DTS for $1800 which has component switching and is rated very well. My main speakers really eat the watts (like all maggies) and I have also considered getting separates, so that I can bump up the wattage as I see fit. That would also allow me to keep the amps and upgrade just the pre/processor in the future. Budget is up to $5000.

What do you think of the following:
Sunfire Theater Grand and amps
Meridian Pre/processor (video and audio separates) and amps
Rotel
Lexicon
Krell
Adcom

Is there anything worth considering that I have left out?

Ok, maybe the subject is a little misleading, but you really should feel rewarded knowing that you have helped a fellow enthusiast make the right decision. TIA - Carl

Have you considered B&K components? Their Reference 20 Preamp has lots of inputs, plus the ability to store all settings in memory and lock them away! It doesn't at this time offer component video inputs although that may be an upgrade offered. All of their receivers and preamps can be upgraded as technology changes. The website is bkcomp.com.

For the money Sunfire is a good brand but if your willing to pay a little more give Meridian a shot!

I listened to and compared a Sunfire to a Krell system (processor & amp) when looking for my own home theater system. The Krell system (I don't remember the model numbers) did sound better but it cost $10,000, about twice what the Sunfire system did, at a local store. I ended up going with the Sunfire Theater Grand Processor and Cinema Grand Signature Edition Amplifier (405W/channel into 8 ohms, 5 chanels) and am very pleased with them. You can probably do better on price searching on the net but for the cost I wanted the piece of mind in dealing with real people if you know what I mean. Either system will do everything you want.

Carl,
If you have a budget of $5k, I would highly consider the B&K Ref 20 pre/pro/tuner. This unit is fully board and software upgradable. It's the only piece in its price range that has that type of capability. Mate the pre/pro with the B&K Reference series amps and you are on your way!! They just came out with a new amp called the Ref 7250. A 200x5 channel powerhouse. This thing is over 20 inches deep!! The sound quality of the two together provide nothing but pure CLEAN power. It's just like having a source unit with a gain control. No coloration of the sound, no smoothing out the highs, just exactly what you feed it will end up at your speakers. If you like the 2 amp approach. Try the Ref 4420, 225x2 and the Ref 4430, 200x3. If you are interested in these pieces, email me and let me know.. I'm an authorized dealer for B&K.
Oh, and if you are considering the Krell HTS pre/pro, well.. I'm an authorized dealer too. I'll make sure that you get my full attention.

John
