I just bought a Yamaha DSP-A1 at a clearance sale, the catch being that it didn't come with a remote. So, I'm looking for a remote that'll work with my Yamaha receiver. I'm willing to spend a couple hundred dollars, but the cheaper the better. Any advice? Thanks.

Frd,

Since you have no remote you will need a universal
remote that has an extensive built in code database
to get the remote to function. A simple learning type
remote will do you no good if it doesn't contain a pre
set list of device codes, you have no remote to teach
it from. I will not tell you which remote to buy, some
others on the forum may suggest the Radioshack One For
All style remote (I beleive it's a 15-994 or something
to that effect) You may also be better off posting this
in the remote section of the forum instead of here in
the Home Theater Section.

You might want to try the pronto or xantech urc2.They are compatibale with everything and you local professianal will be able to program it for you.We sell the xantech for about $390.00 but that includes programing. The pronto will cost you more but it vary's on the on how extensive your program is. You can also program it your self. It might take a while but you will get it. If you have anymore questions you can e-mail me. Good luck.

Have you checked with yamaha about getting a replacement remote? They sent me one for my rxv2095 for about $120. It's good to have that original remote even if you have a universal.

Thanks for everyone's replies. I know very little about remotes, so I really appreciate the help.

Apparently, I can order the remote for the DSP-A1 for $150 from Yamaha. I'm working with budget constraints (having really spent more than I had intended on the receiver), so I'm not prepared to spend the money for both the Yamaha receiver and a universal remote. So, I guess it comes down to choosing between the Yamaha remote and something like a $250 pronto... Having the Yamaha is nice, since I can be sure it will control all the features on the receiver. Of course, a universal remote has the cool interface, and the ability to control other parts of my system (which I'm still building btw, so I'm not 100% sure what that will look like a year from now). Anybody have any suggestions which way I should go? Thanks again! Your posts have already been a big help.

Which is the remote that comes with the DSP-A1... the huge silver one? I've got the RSV-2092 Reciever, getting a bit old now but still a superb machine. However, I thought the remote that came with this was pathetic, and I would not recommend buying this - its very cumbersome and badly designed. I recently went to a yamaha dealer and bought as spare parts, the remote for the rxv3000. It cost $150 Aus dollars (about $75US) and I think this is a great remote. The best hard button remote Ive seen.

Cheers, Cam

I have DSP-A1 as well and I can tell you the remote has been in the drawer because it sucks. I bought the SL-9000 and the codes are built right into it. If I was buying one today I'd go with the MX-500.

My suggestion is buy an HTM MX-500, reviewed elsewhere on this site, and go down to your dealer and learn the codes you need from there, or from a friend who has a similar remote.

Or, buy the MX-500 and a Cinema 7 to get those original equpment codes.

I would go with the Pronto. You'll really appreciate the flexibility in the future as your home theater evolves. Plus you can download a DSP-A1 CCF and be in business right off the bat. However, you should take into consideration the learning curve for ProntoEdit and the time it takes to design your CCF. Once you're there though, it's paradise!

It might be time to start thinking outside of the typical remote control box. Check out the Harmony at www.easyzapper.com. It will be released in November, and it takes a new approach to controlling Devices. It asks "What do you want to do?" like, Watch a DVD. Then it sets up your system automatically to do that, and even presses Play for you. It is not macro-based, and it doesn't care about discrete codes: if your stuff doesn't have 'em, it knows whether they are on or off anyway. You have to use this one to believe it. ... Mike

I have a gold DSP a1 and like it very much but the remote is junk. I would recommend that you buy the MX 500 and borrow a DSP a1 remote to learn from. The codes with the MX 500 are its very weak area. I also ran a Home Producer 8 from All in One with my Yamaha for a long time with 2 sat receivers for pic in pic, a panasonic 32 inch, a Apex DVD, a JVC VCR with all dolby digital outputs going directly into the yamaha and the videos directly into the tv videos and pic in pic switching worked very well with the home producer as I set up a macro to not only swich the video on the tv but the audio on the DSP. Works perfectly but am slowly migrating to a MX 500 because of tivo support and a few other things. Just do not buy the Yamaha remote, it is horrible except for initially setting up the DSP's parameters. Incidently the DSP's manual is poorly written and you must be able to read between the lines and have some expertise to figure out how to set things up properly.

Mike-Real interesting remote. I find it hard to believe that it will do everything it says w/o problems. I would however, like to give it a try. Have you actually used it? I would like to hear a review of it and real world capabilities....Tony

ttiger: Yes, I'm using it now as a Beta tester. I think I'll start a new thread in the Universal Remote Control Forum here. Check it out for my initial thoughts... ... Mike

OK, I had to order one, if it works It will be a "God Send" for my in-laws. Just think I will never have to reprogram their Pronto Again! If this remote passes my "Mother-in-law test" I will by stock in the company. I just hope it is not to good to be true!!

I'll let you know!

Thanks,
Don
