Eric,

Check out www.thebigpicture.com They have forums there for 2 of Sony's LCD projectors. I think they are pretty good. The ceapest can be had for $3400 at one of the sponsors. HTH - Carl

I have a BarcoData 1001 projector for sale that has been in my home theatre for about a year and a half. It is currently ceiling mounted, with an 8 ft wide (96in diagonal) front-projection screen.

These are HDTV ready CRT projectors, with various RGBsync, Composite or TTL inputs and a remotable control panel. I'm currently feeding it from a Cable Converter, a VCR and a DVD-equipped PC running Windows95.

Barco makes only commercial units that are designed for continuous use and seem to last forever in home use.

With only $3K to spend and needing HDTV capability your only real choice is a used CRT projector. These are very large heavy devices and set-up is very critical. However, if your technical skills are on about the level of putting a new motherboard in a computer, you can do this yourself. A place called Encore! video advertises they have a bunch of low hour Sony VPH 1272Q's in stock. Most are priced ~$2500 or so. They are great for home theaters, so long as the room is completely dark. A ceiling mount will cost about $350 and figure on about $500 for a screen (lots of people like Draper screens with the 2.5 gain fabric). You'll also need a DVDO line doubler at about $600.
This puts you a bit over budget, but if you can completely darken your theater room, you'll be happy with the image this set-up provides.

Also - a good HT PC can be built (That is, a Home Theater Computer) as a scaler substitute. The DVD picture quality from a computer is superior to a DVDO, if you need to run at 800x600 or 1024x768 or beyond.

More info at the Home Theater Computers forum at AVSCIENCE.

Just so that you know!

Eric, I purchased the sony 400Q LCD projector
and teamed it with the Draper premier electric
screen with M2500 screen material.I'm extremely
pleased with its performance to dollar ratio and
have no problem recommending it to anyone with a
passion for movies.Read the 400Q forum from the
big picture .com site, and even ask the moderators at the "avscience.com" forum their opinion, you'll be suprised since they sell alot of CRT's.
Hope this helps.

Eric -

I'm running an InFocus LP750, which is a 3-panel
LCD XGA (1024x768) video projector, making it as close to HDTV ready as you can get. It also doubles as the world's biggest Nintendo. (g) Nice to have multiple functionality.

Price is over the top, but you might be able to locate one used to fit into your budget, or explore another model in the InFocus lineup, or another manufacturer such as Viewsonic, NEC, Proxima, etc.

Good Luck!
