I've been reading a lot about the new personel TV systems from Replay and TIVO. I'm looking for people who actually own one and their experiences with them. if you are not familiar with them checkout:

Patrick,

I like you have been looking at the technology.

Both are in there infancy to say the least. The hype about the number of hours of recording time seem to be VERY overblown.

Take a look at this review from ZDTV:

[Link: zdnet.com]

The concept is great but the technology is not quite there. What happens when we start getting HDTV broadcasts at the end of the year (want to talk about eating storage space).

I personally have been looking at moving toward a Digital VCR functionality on my PC (disk is CHEAP and easily expandable) similar to the Digital VCR software from ATI Technologies. Although the directory services are cool from both companies (REPLAY/TIVO), one for the PC is needed.

The other selling point which you really need to ask yourself about your possible usage is the PAUSE feature. Some will use it, some won't (big selling point from them).

My two coopers....

I just took a look at that review at ZDNET of the Replay and it was rather disappointing. Only 3-4 hours of record time for $700 dollars. I was almost thinking of getting one. I doubt that the Tivo will review any better.

I to would like to here from someone who owns one.
I have not seen a review on the Tivo unit but it appears that you get a little more record time for your money. On the other hand the Replay has an expansion port on the back for adding another hard drive that the Tivo does not.

I don't know about Replay, but I spoke with the TiVO guys at length during CES this past January. The idea is that you buy different units for different amounts of recording time. They use a proprietary drive system, so you can't just swap drives in and out at will.

Another thing to consider...Replay's device comes with free programming information (the channel guide), whereas TiVO's is a $10/month subscription service.

I have had a ReplayTV unit for about 6 months. I couldn't be happier with it. It is unclear whether my pre-production model has the same storage capacity as the production units, but it has really changed how I watch TV. I highly recommend it.

Video quality is better than anything I have seen from a VCR, and it is quite convenient.

I haven't read the review, but I would buy another one in a heart beat. (I would probably buy the middle model, for the increased storage space.)

BTW, the ReplayTV unit has firewire connections in back, which will come in amazingly handy in the future for Digital VCR's, etc...

The Firewire is a great idea for expansion. The problem is however, both REPLAY and TIVO do not support HDTV. They will both need to be completely replaced and or completely overhauled.

Where can you purchase the Replay? I know you can purchase directly from the Company on their website. Are there any other sources. Any mail order or other web sources?

I have had a Replay with 28 hr. capacity for some months. As with any new product that offers so many operating choices one must learn how to use the thing. In general, I think the machine is great, a real lifestyle changer. People alwys grouse about any machine, finding reasons to wait until the perfect device comes out, someting that never happens. Get one, enjoy the hell out of it adn relax.
