I have purchased 500 ft monster s16 speaker cable. It is not ul cl approved, but is there any real danger of putting it in-wall? Thanks

Well, I have long runs of standard 10-guage speaker wire running to my rear speakers through the walls/ceiling. One of the runs is forty feet long, and there is no added static or distortion... seems fine. However I have seen noise picked up from long runs parallel to electrical wiring. Safety-wise, I see nothing wrong.

Freak,
The reason as to why you need to have UL or CL approved cable is because if your house caught on fire, the cable will not transmit heat or electricity through to the rest of the house.. IE. you have an attic fire that would have been easily extinguished, but the speaker cable spreads the fire throughout the rest of the house!!! Also, if you are going to have runs of cable longer than 50ft, a 16/2 will conduct a rather large loss in signal degredation. 14/2 or 14/2 (gauge/#of conductors)rcl cable will do you much better and will also protect your biggest investment... your home!! Email me for more advice!!

If it is in the wall it has to be UL approved according to the national eltrical code. You can skimp now, but if you had a fire as mentioned in previous response do you hope that your insurance policy is as good as the salesman that sold it to you. Insurance companies look for any reason to not have to pay. IS IT REALLY WORTH IT!!!!!

WRONG!

Low voltage wiring is NOT required to be UL approved! Speaker wire falls under this catagory. My father-in-law is with State Farm Insurance and after asking him, his response was: "there is NO way an insurance company will deny your claim as long as the wire is used in a low voltage situation such as speaker wire"

Just a thought...

If you DID have a fire, how would they know if your speaker wire WAS UL approved? They wouldn't!!! The plastic jacket would melt away leaving no way to "read" what rating it was!

Go ahead, put the wire in place!
