I am have issues with my Sony WEGA. Over the past couple of months the RED has seem to get overwhelming in the picture. It is not really bad but especially when viewing at night, a black screen appears with a heavy tinge of red in it. I have the picture adjustment turned down significantly so I am not overdriving it.

Short of having the set calibrated(which I seriously intend to), what adjustments in the service menu can I use to correct this? I h ave looked and found G and B adjusts, but no R... WHat should I do?

Well, [Link: members.accessus.net] has a pretty good description of Sony service mode settings. You might want to look at:

AXIS (0) - Cleans up the red push & oranginess in the yellows.
AXPL (0) - Same as above but on newer models. Cleans up Reds/Yellows.
R-YR - Sets the amount of RED
R-YB - Sets the amount of RED

Remember to read all the usual warnings on the dangers with fooling around in service mode.

One other thing, don't turn COLOR up much. It should be around the middle, or the state where reds don't become... radioactive. Sony Trinitron screens are known for heavy red push. I suggest picking up a copy of Avia or Video Essentials which will help you better tune the color on your set.

Thanks, I'll check those settingings out tonight.

My color is sig. turned down because of this. I DO have VE and when properly setup with VE my TV has as you say radioactive reds. Even when backing it off SEVERAL notches, my reds are pretty saturated..,

Just as an update, my WEGA does not have ANY of those adjustment Items and I couldn't find anything that was reasonably close..

Brian,

Locate your nearest ISF (imaging science foundation) dealer, there are over 1700 in this country!! They'll make your tv look like you're looking through a window!!! Right now, with any tv that you have ever seen in your entire life, you are lookin at only 30% of that tv's capability, get an Avia test disc to calibrate, and your still only gettin 70% of that tv's performance.. let a certfied ISF technician go to your home, let him use Industry Standard Test Patters and let him go into the service menus!!! He'll also converge and center, and level the tv picture for ya!! for 180 or so bucks, it's worth every penny.. (consider the amount of money you paid for that Sony TV!! 180 bucks is a bargain!!) Email me for more infor!!

Brian,

When was your tv purchased? I work at a sony dealer and about 8-9 months ago we got three 36XBRs in straight that needed to be sent back to the factory for the problem that you are describing. The thing that really gave it away was when you put the tv on one of the video inputs with no source material playing, giving you a black screen. You could see red pinstripes running horizontally across the screen about 2 or 3 inches apart. Sony said that they had a batch that was made with an overactive red drive. Three of us at the store are ISF trained and no matter what we did we couldn't get the grey scales to look proper.

Just a thought...

Steven
