I have an old Sony remote that always worked with DTV DVR. New HR-24 and the remote won't work. The old remote that was used to program the Sony still operates the HR-24. I tried to re-program the Sony using "learn" and no luck. It seems to be sending additional commands to the DVR. Pushing the up arrow in the guide will move the highlighted guide up one line and then one more. Hitting "exit" will send a continuous string of commands. I can see the receiver light blinking and the HD mode changes because of the extra commands. Any ideas? I've been looking at newer remotes but I'd like to get this one working if possible.

To have cleaner learns when using Directv remote to teach, turn off the extra signal sent with each command, on the White remote:

1. directv device
2. press and hold MUTE & SELECT for two blinks, release
3. enter 9 6 3
4. press CH Down

You'll notice the menu items change when using the remote on the directv receiver, to get the signal back, redo the above steps, but in the 4th step press CH UP

Thanks for the reply. I tried your suggestion and no luck. The Sony operates a different model DTV DVR without problems. Some buttons work and some don't. The up and down arrows still send extra signals or corrupt signals. The DTV light on the receiver starts blinking fast and the guide runs away like a button is stuck. I've verified the remote isn't sending anything by looking at the IR LEDS on the front with a camera. The remote shuts down when I release the button. I've looked at the signals from both with an oscilloscope and don't see anything different. I beginning to wonder if the DVR is bad but three other DTV remotes work and one is about 12 years old.

Update.
Looks like following the Sony instructions was the problem. You can't hold the button down too long while "teaching" the code. The Sony will transmit the learned code as many times as it learns it. The HR-24 must have a buffer that stores received codes and executes them. If it get an 'up arrow' 50 times it executes it 50 times. Pressing another button interrupts the command. If I only press the DTV remote button for a short press the Sony learns and executes it properly.
I only have one other issue to fix now. The left arrow won't clear so I can program it. Pressing "delete+left arrow" locks up the remote and requires removing a battery to reset. I might have to clear the entire device menu to fix.
