THIS THREAD IS INTENDED AS A REFERENCE SOURCE FOR OWNERS OF SONY RECEIVERS. PLEASE DO NOT POST QUESTIONS HERE.

If your receiver is new or and/or not listed here, see your owner's manual. For the receiver, see the section "Adjustments using the SET UP button", usually around page 35-40, and for the remote, see "Selecting the mode of the remote".

Listed below are the procedures for changing your receiver and its remote to AV1.
THIS IS NECESSARY BECAUSE SONY RECEIVERS LISTED ARE FACTORY PRESET FOR AV2, AND UNIVERSAL REMOTES REQUIRE THE AV1 SETTING TO OPERATE THE RECEIVER.

The AV1 setting for the receiver must be changed on the receiver; it cannot be done by using the remote (except as noted).

NOTE: Both the receiver and the remote must be set to the same command mode in order to use the original remote. Some receivers sold outside of the U. S. use different remotes than the US models, so all instructions may not apply to non/US receivers.

You can find your receiver or remote more easily by using the search function (CTRL + F)

Procedures are given for the following Receivers and Home Theater Systems:

HT-4800DP (STR-K4800P), HT-4850DP and HT-5800DP (STR-K5800P receiver and RM-PP760 remote)
HT-6600DP (STR-K850P receiver)

The info for the STR-K650P remote also applies to the RM-U66 remote supplied with the STR-K660P, the RM-AAU002 remote supplied with the STR-K670P, and the RM-AAU004 remote supplied with the STR-K675P, meaning you cannot change the command mode on the remote)

2. Press and hold the INPUT button
3. Press the power button to toggle AV modes

On the RM-AAU014 remote supplied with the STR-DG710, it doesn't look like the command mode can be changed, so if you want to learn any commands from that remote, leave your receiver set at AV2. You will have to learn everything because you cannot use any preprogrammed codes on your universal remote with this setting. Note: The procedures for the STR-DG500, STR-DG600, STR-DG900, STR-DG910, and HT-7000DH and HT-7550DH with STR-K7000 receivers are not in the manual but have been reported by users as correct.

On the receiver (except the STR-DA3200ES and STR-DG1000):
1. Press and hold the INPUT MODE (STR-DG500, STR-DG600 and STR-DG800) or the INPUT (HT-7000DH AND HT-7550DH) button.

2. When the Command Mode is set to "AV2", "Command Mode AV2" appears on the display
3. When the Command Mode is set to "AV1", "Command Mode AV1" appears on the display
That's all it says, so I assume that each time you perform this operation it will toggle between AV1 and AV2.

On the remote (STR-DG500 with AAU005 and STR-DG600 with AAP012 remotes): I don't think you can change the command mode on the remote, so if you want to learn any commands from that remote, leave your receiver set at AV2. You will have to learn everything because you cannot use any preprogrammed codes on your universal remote with this setting. If you don't want to learn anything, or your universal remote doesn't have learning capability, you can change the receiver to AV1 and use the universal remotes programmed codes.

On the remote (STR-DG800 with RM-AAP008 remote only). On the STR-DG900 with AAL002 and STR-DG910 with AAP-016, this procedure has not been reported as working, so if anyone tries it, let me know if it works or not by posting at the end of this thread.

1. Press I/O while pressing RM Setup. The RM Setup button flashes.
2. Press the numeric button (1) for AV1 or the numeric button (2) for AV2.
3. Press ENTER when the RM setup button lights up. The RM Setup indicator slowly flashes twice and the command mode switches.

On the remote (HT-7000DH and HT-7550DH with STR-K7000 receiver and RM-AAP012 remote only):
This procedure is not in the manual, but was reported by a user as correct:
1. Press and hold RM SETUP until it flashes twice.
2. While still holding RM SETUP, press VIDEO 1. The RM SETUP button will flash once for AV1.
3. You are done. You DO NOT have to press ENTER.
If you press VIDEO 2, the RM SETUP button will flash twice and the remote will be set to AV2.

RECEIVER AND REMOTE: HT-DDW700 (STR-K700 receiver)
This procedure was reported by Mr. Mod from the service manual:
On the receiver:
1. While depressing the MOVIE button, press the power I/O
button to turn on the main power.
2. Either the message “C.MODE.AV 1” or “C.MODE.AV 2”
appears.

On the remote: I don't think you can change the command mode on the remote, so if you want to learn any commands from that remote, leave your receiver set at AV2. You will have to learn everything because you cannot use any preprogrammed codes on your universal remote with this setting. If you don't want to learn anything, or your universal remote doesn't have learning capability, you can change the receiver to AV1 and use the universal remotes programmed codes.

RECEIVER AND REMOTE: HT-DDW900 with STR-K900 receiver and RM-AAP013 remote AND HT-DDW995with STR-K995 receiver and AAP017 remote (see this post for HT-DDW950 [Link: remotecentral.com]

On the remote (RM-AAP013 Not verified for the AAP-017 remote but same method should work-let me know if it doesn't):
1. Press VIDEO1 button (for AV1) or the VIDEO2 button (for AV2) while pressing the RM SET UP button
2. The RM SET UP button flashes once for AV1 or twice for AV2, then the command mode switches.

On the receiver:
Turn on the receiver while pressing 2CH/A.Direct Button
When the Command Mode is set to "AV2", "Command Mode AV2" appears on the display
When the Command Mode is set to "AV1", "Command Mode AV1" appears on the display

Thank you so much for posting this reference.

I was just about to lose my mind, trying to get my new universal remote to work with my receiver.

This advice did the trick.

Thanks

RECEIVER: STR-DE597 - How To Use A Universal Remote

On the Receiver: (STR-DE597- the command mode must be changed on the receiver to AV1. The receiver and the remote are factory

set to AV2.

If Receiver Is Changed to AV1, your universal remote presets Should Work Fine.
If the receiver is left at AV2 (default), you will have to use the original STR-DE597
remote and learn everything from the STR-DE597 remote to another learning remote).

Here's How To Change The Receiver To AV1. And Then Use A Preset Code From A Universal Remote.

1. On The Receiver Press I/O to turn the power Off
2. Then, on the receiver hold down ENTER and press I/O this will switch Receiver to Av1,
you can now use yor universal remote
(my One For All URC6012 Would Not Work Until The Receiver Was Chaged To AV1.)

My One-For-All URC6012 Now Works Fine With The Provided Code (1058).

Thanks For The Help, This Was Driving Me Nuts...

Thank you very much for posting this information. I checked again and there is nothing in the manual on changing to AV1, but this is the second receiver I have seen for which Sony omitted the instructions.

I have updated my thread to reflect this new information.

I don't know why you posted at the end of this receiver thread when it didn't have anything to do with it (as far as I can tell), or why you put more in your profile than you did in the post, or what you mean by the RS 15-2117 issue, which might be better addressed in the OFA forum, but if you need an owner's manual for your Cinema 7, you can go here:

Hi Ron. Excellent reference here; you've been very thorough, covering all the bases. You may recall answering some of my posts here on this question about a year ago, when I added my STR-DE595. Well, I've just added a Toshiba big screen TV, and upped my DVD player from a Sony DVP-NS325 (non-progressive) to a DVP-NS575PB progressive, to go along with the digital TV. So, I've also just reworked my RM-VL900 setup, and thought I'd add a couple notes from my experience to this thread, for other readers.

First, as Ron noted, the RM-U306A cannot be changed to AV1; it is AV2 only. I'm in Canada, and as in the U.S.A., the RM-U306A is the remote which came with my STR-DE595; but I can't speak for other locations.

The STR-DE595 *can* be changed to AV1, but the component codes for Sony AV1 mode available in universal remotes and learning remotes do not contain function codes for some of its newer features; neither are there extended (discrete) function codes available for those features. This includes some important features, such as the menu system. The same may be true for other newer Sony receiver models.

So, if you switch your receiver to AV1, and your OEM remote cannot be switched to AV1, you will loose some [important] features. If your OEM remote can be switched to AV1, then you can learn the missing features from the OEM remote, assuming you are using a learning remote.

In AV2 mode, all functions are available via the OEM remote, but there are no extended function codes available in AV2 mode at all; including discrete codes for ON/OFF, etc. Further, there are no component codes for Sony AV2 mode in universal or learning remotes. Therefore, you will have to learn *all* functions from your OEM remote, assuming you are using a learning remote.

From experience, I can say that the Sony RM-VL700 and RM-VL900 remotes [I don't know about other Sony models] have sufficient capacity to learn a different code to every button, for every component; but the same is definately not true of all learning remotes.

Fortunately, Sony receivers/remotes do have seperate buttons for each input (Video 1, Video 2, DVD, etc.). And, pressing any such input select button on the remote will turn the receiver on, if it is off; they therefore can be used in place of a discrete ON code. The discrete OFF code is harder; it may be done by using the System Standby mode, which on the RM-U306A remote is accomplished by pressing the Standby button and the Power button at the same time. But be warned that this will turn off *all* your Sony components, not just the receiver.

In my case, the best solution was to remain in AV2 mode, learn all functions from the OEM remote to my RM-VL900, and use the Input Selects/System Standby to replace discrete ON/OFF in macros. That's fine for me, as I have two ON macros which each select a different input, and one OFF macro which does shut the entire system off. Your mileage may vary.

These problems, coupled with the bug in the discrete ON code of newer Sony DVD players, seem to be a foul weather indicator for Sony. Fortunately, the work-arounds are sufficient for many. Hope this is helpful to some.
