What a difference TV brands make! Could it be the quality of their tuners?

I got a cheapo Toshiba TV/DVD combo and that thing receives many more stations than my bigger, older LG HDTV.

Interestingly, when we were having problems receiving CFTO's sound, there was another antenna user two blocks over with an LG TV and exactly the same problem. The little Toshiba was fine.

What might be useful is for readers to let others know about HD brands that seem to work well or poorly with antennas. That way, trends may emerge about which brands to get and to avoid.

I'll start:

Excellent Reception -- Toshiba 19" DVD VCR combo Model 19LV6 10 C-T

I have no problem with the Toronto stations being 16.5 km from the CN Tower using a 2 year old 40" Sharp LC-40E77UN. I'm using a +35 year old Radio Shack twin bowtie indoor antenna mounted near the 2nd floor ceiling. The antenna is aimed at Buffalo. The GE UHF/VHF amp I recently bought actually seems to slightly weaken the Toronto signals but greatly stengthens the Buffalo & Rochester ones. CHCH Hamilton is almost unreadable during day hours.

Its funny but LG together with Samsung are among the few companies that manufacture ATSC tuners , not only that, they are part of the ATSC task force that develops the standard and related technology.

Sue the question is , Were both TV connected to the same coaxial cable for a proper comparison?, or Did they have their different feed line?. It maight have been that the coaxial for the LG was longer or in other words with more losses along the line.

In any case , yes , not all tuners are creted equally, some have better sensitivity therefore perform better than others. i rather choose a TV set for its display performance rather than its tuner sensitivity , the latter can be overcome with the proper antenna system.

Remember, Goldstar (LG) bought the rights to Zenith that owned the patents to, not just BTSC stereo from the 80's, but ATSC to boot.

Newer tuners, better results, older tuners the opposite no matter what the cost of the device (for the most part).
Years from now, you might as well kiss recording OTA TV goodbye thanks to ATSC 3

Good to know, Bruce. I use a feed off the same cable that feeds the old LG. The new little Toshiba gets excellent reception -- even Channel 11, which has been toast in Toronto since September 1.

I have a 32" Insignia 1080P and a Samsung 32" 1080P . They both receive all the same channels except 11. Jamestown and Batavia come in rarely. This is at the Broadview subway. Where are you that you can get channel 11?

It must be the apartment between the antenna-35 feet off the ground- and stony creek. I'm going to shop around for 1080P Toshibas
