Hi,

I am looking for advise on what to get. Here is my situation.

I live in Kanata (Suburb west of Ottawa), it's a single home and I want to install an outdoor antenna on my deck. The open side would be east, of course other side (west) would be the house.

Currently I am getting in hd cbc(4),cbc f(9) sun(20) and omni1(27 weak) using phillips indoor antenna (mant510). I am hoping to get PBS. What do you recommend for my setup. Keeping in mind this is a deck, I am not for something huge and ugly... :)

Let me know what you think if you have any expert advice on this?

Are there are contractors that can install on my roof, it's very high so I cannot do it myself. in Ottawa?

Thanks,

Hey ssss25,

Wow, it's been a while w/o a response to your original post. Guess there's not many people like us in Kanata. Yes, I am also in Kanata and have an OTA HD antenna. Since your original post have you put up your antenna?

I'll try to give you some suggestions / background based upon my own experience. You can take this literally since you "should" be able to get similar reception to me. As for antennas, most outdoor OTA antenna's aren't that big. Mine is almost 1 meter square. Not sure if that's too "big" or not. I suggest mounting it has high as you can. Roof ideally. I can provide the contact info for someone that can do that if you want. If you're going to mount it on your deck (if you haven't done so already since your initial post) there are two additional things to aid your reception:

1) Solid cable run (no breaks in the cable, or as few as possible) between your set and the antenna.
2) Use a preamplifier. I found the preamp improved my reception greatly.

-As for me I have a roof mounted HD antenna similar to this:

However, mine was a generic bought off of eBay for $80 total including shipping.

-I also have a Channel Master 7777 preamplifier:

-Since my house was built new, Minto ran a conduit from my attic to my basement, which is used for a clean (single cable) line from my antenna to my preamp, then out to my TV.

-With this setup I am able to receive the following digital channels:
CBC (English) 4-1 (HD)
CBC (French) 9-1 (HD)
SunTV 20-1 (HD)
OMNI 1 27-1 (HD but lots of programming is SD)
OMNI 2 66-1 (HD but lots of programming is SD)
PBS (WCFE) 57-1 (HD)
PBS (WCFE) 57-2 (SD)
PBS (WCFE) 57-3 (SD)

I also get a few good quality SD channels:
CTV
A-Channel
TVO
CityTV

I get bad (but viewable in a pinch) reception on:
Global
CHCH

Hope this helps.

Hi Guys

I'm in Kanata as well but only get 1 channel working (CTV 13-1). I am using an antenna that is facing south... which faces the front of my home. Would it make a difference if I were to install the antenna on the back of the house facing North?

No idea but it will make a lot of a difference if you would have either told us where you lived or in which direction the Tx towers are.
