I was just wondering if anyone can help fix my problem, I have called the cable company and TV company and no one knows. I have an HD Motorola box DCH6200 and I just bought a Philips 42" LCD 42PFL3603D. Time Warner Cable is my provider and they send out a universal remote for the box which is Universal Electronics Atlas OCAP 5-device. The problem is the cable remote won't run the cable box unless the TV is either off or in the menu setting which I have to do with the TV remote itself. So I have to turn the TV off or in menu and check the cable box to see what channel I am going to and then turn the TV back on or off menu. The is my 3rd remote from the company and my 3rd box, to take out of the equation faulty equipment. I also tried re-programming the remote with the codes in the instructions. I am hoping someone out there knows what I can do!! Thanks!!

Does this problem only occur with your current TV or does it occur with other TV's? Need to find out if it's a TV problem or a cable box problem.

Only with the current TV. I have hooked the same cable box to an older Philps 27" TV and had no issues. Thanks.

Sounds like your TV is flooding the IR sensor on the cable box... Is there a "Power Save" mode on the TV or an automatically-adjusting ambient light sensor? Turning that off may help.

hold a magazine or somwthing over the top of the cable box, hanging over it 6 inches ot so, put the remote under the magazine and try to change channels (with TV on) if this works the your tv is flooding the IR on the cable box. )asPeterN said) maybe relocate cable box away from TV some
why have a nice system if you cant operate it, program the remote the right way the FIRST time!

That is exactly what is happening. Your TV is flooding the IR causing it to overpower the IR from the remote. Move the cable box away from the TV and put up some kind of shield and see how it works then.

This won't look good but it works. My tech told me the sensor was being blocked by new high contrast HDTV's. Stick a small post it note over the box sensor, which is just to the right of the channel display. You can now change channels. Mine will work without it after an hour or so,but have to put it on there in the morning when first turned on.

Bfhaines,
anyhomeneeds said that 15 days ago and cb1 said it three days earlier!
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Take a small piece of 25 MM film and tape it over the sensor on the cable or satelite box sensor. This works

That's amusing.

Film that makes negatives? Diapositive film?

Unexposed (at least, until you take it out to do this)?

Exposed to dark light, then developed, so basically clear? Since we're dealing with IR, something that looks clear to our eyes might be opaque to IR, so a bit more info would help.

Exposed to some general color, then deveoped, so that to our eyes it looks like __________?

and, the clincher,
Randy, welcome to the site.

Please check the date of the last entry to a thread, then consider whether the original poster (often referred to here as OP) still needs the information.
