OK I was at Frys Electronics yesterday (mistake no. 1, I know).. And they have the discontinued Sony A4 Sat Receivere and next to it the Sony A50. I couldnt figure out what the differences were. I asked the sales person and her big answer was- the A50 is the newer model. Anyone know WHAT features the A50 has that the A4 doesnt and if its worth spending an extra $50 to have the A50?

From what I gather the A50 now has a Smart File feature for use with Smart File compatible VCRs and there is a new interface/guide which one person has said is horrendous. Aside from that, the A50 and the A4 are identical.

If you're using the Pronto and find discrete on/off to be important, it appears the A50 doesn't respond to the same codes as the A4... so far, none have been found. From what I hear, both are excellent components.

From what I hear, the trick that allows the A2, A3 & A4 to work in both IR and RF mode doesn't work on the A50.

The A50 is very slow(not like old sonys) It is as slow as an rca sat. on a cold day in mexico. But you can surf channels and not stop watching your current program! COOL! The discrete codes DO NOT WORK(still searching) the ir rf trick does not work. If it were up to me I would like to have an A4 over an A50 any day of the week.

I just order an A-4 (to replace my A-2 for Dolby Digital) from Discovery Satellites (http://www.discoverysat.com). The price was $229, but you have to activate it as a second receiver or it's $125 more.

So I went to the A50 site listed above and read the features listed and it reminded me...what IS this port EVER going to be used for??

9-pin low speed data port for connection to future peripherals

What future peripherals???

Anybody have ANY ideas? All Sony boxes have this port (far as I know) and I've never heard ANY mention of a use.

The 9 pin jack on the back of the unit can be used with the ReplayTV (and the TIVO I think).
the Replay unit uses this connection to directly change the channels on the dbs so you could possibly use the rf feature of the dbs and have the replay change channels, It uses infrared remote.

Can't wait to get my hands on the new Sony Tivo box!!

With Sony's new Playstation 2 looks like the next 12 months will be interesting for all of us addicted to Sony products.

I hope Sony does some kind of DBS/Tivo/Playstation2/WebTV box (OK I can wish can't I)

Has any one heard any detals about Sony's Tivo?(I've read the press release)

More info on the Sony IR / RF trick. Where is the Features section, Proprietary Remote Systems?
Looked it up in my A4 manual with no luck?
