Now that it looks like the new NHL CBA is going to be approved by both sides, does anyone know if the CBC will actually be transmitting Hockey Night in Canada in OTA HDTV?

I checked the CBC web site and I didn't find a direct reference to future HDTV OTA hockey broadcasts.

Hmm, I think it was the goal to show at least some games in HD.

I had assumed that after the World Cup of Hockey had been broadcast in HDTV, that the CBC would make HNIC the most likely show they'd move to HDTV.

But there are some other possible scenarios.

The CBC could make HDTV HNIC only available to cable and satellite providers, for extra revenue.

Leafs TV could make HDTV HNIC available only as a cable subscriber service.

Maybe the CBC only rented the HDTV equipment for the World Cup of Hockey and may not want to pay for an entire season of TV equipment upgrades. Outfitting the ACC with multiple HDTV cameras and other production equipment might be quite expensive and there'd be no extra revenue by broadcasting in OTA HDTV.

I wonder if the CBC only has one studio with HDTV equipment? That may explain why only a handful of CBC shows are produced and broadcast in HDTV.

I sure hope I'm wrong and the CBC shortly announces a full season of HDTV HNIC.

Edit:
There's already a thread on this topic at Digital Home Canada:

i think a better question will be, will the cbc add sub channel feeds of games that are being shown when they do a split feed, ie a game in toronto and a game in montreal, so on CBC-T main channel we get the leaf game but on the sub we can watch the montreal (or any other game, especially in the playoffs)...

I saw another thread where a CBC engineer claimed they didn't like subchannels as each one reduced the main channel's quality. Which is fine by me - although they could always do interesting things with SD feeds when HD isn't available. :-)

true, however I would still like to see a split feed of the games at the cost of a little hd quality...

The CBC in Toronto (English Television) currently has one remote truck which is fully HD capable. This is the truck which would be used for hockey remotes out of the ACC. A feed from this truck would be fed back to a HD ready Presentation Studio (no studio floor space or cameras, just audio board and image mixer) situated in the Toronto Broadcast Centre where the HD hockey game would have com'ls & promos and other graphic elements added to it. The feed from this HD Presentation Studio is then fed to the Network Operations Centre where regional com'ls, CBC Logo, etc. are added and the feed is then sent to the Toronto CBLT-DT (CN Tower) and the Montreal CBMT-DT (currently on top of Society Radio Canada building) transmitters. Taps are taken from these transmitter feeds for Rogers cable in Toronto and Bell Expressvue.
There are some edit suites in Toronto capable of HD Post Production editing but these facilities at this time are minimal.

CBC Montreal has one full HD capable Production Studio for their French operations.

So Hockey will be in HD if the CBC truck from Toronto can get to it or if CBC Sports can hire a contractor who has one. If there are multiple games aired on the same night you would see one game in HD and the secondary game in SD.

There will be no OTA digital sub channels broadcast from the CBC....

Hockey will also probably be in HD if CBC can get its union back to work as well...

1- they lost
2- it wasn't in HD...or at leat it wasn't 16x9. I wish the cbc would get they're act togehter and start broadcasting hockey on true HD. What a joke!

CBC will begin to broadcast NHL HNIC in HD as of Nov 5. This was in the newspapers a few years ago and over at DigitalHomeCanada, a CBC Techy who frequents the boards confirmed this in a post (also they dont plan to multicast other HNIC games when there is split feeds, which to me is upsetting)

Yes, Tonight's HNIC, Tampa @ Toronto game from the ACC will be broadcast in 1080i HD with 5.1 audio. As far as I know the following Vancouver @ Calgary game will not be in HD... It will be interesting to see what it looks like if the two games overlap during the coverrage.
