First, a couple clarifiers... ATSC = off air HDTV. If you want SD, you also need a NTSC tuner - and you have to check whether that's for cable, antenna or both. Finally, for digital cable you're going to need a QAM tuner, which will work with both SD and HD formats if it'sa HDTV tuner to start with. However QAM is available unscrambled and scrambled - for scrambled you MUST purchase a tuner with a cable card and you'll have to rent the actual cable card from the cable company plus pay for programming.

With that said, the Sony I have does all of this: HD, SD, off-air, cable, QAM, cable card.

I believe in the US most cable companies provide the local HD networks (CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox) unscrambled, and if that's the case you'd be able to tune them without further expense.

You'll still have to rent the cable card (see, they always find a way). I've heard of prices from $1.50 per month to $10.

Thanks for the info. Tested here at work. Using an LG plasma w/built-in tuner. Initially I set it up for STD cable and only got the channels in our package (up to 71). Changed the tuner settings to IRC and was able to get all the channels in this thread. People today watching 'Boogeyman', 'Hitch', 'Stealth', and some adult content.

Also worked at a co-worker's place with a Sony Bravia LCD. For some reason though it doesn't work at my house. A condo with a Samsung 4252 42" plasma :( Any suggestions? Regular cable (Rogers) works fine up to channel 71. Set it to IRC but it couldn't find any of these high 'secret' channels.

We've got digital cable in the condo. I've also ordered a free Rogers HD box (free programming w/new plasma purchase). I'll try the rescan again when it arrives.

endiz, yes it's possible. If you have analog cable connected to your house then get any digital card that supports cable, run a scan and you should be able to see unscrabled digital channels.Though personally i don't think those channels worth it, except if you're huge sportz fan and need basic channels.

Haven't checked recently, but I doubt anything has changed (since nothing's changed for quite a few months now).

Edit: after a check...

Daniel,

With the Sony reciever, like you have stated you can watch your ATSC OTA, NTSC OTA and CABLE all at the same time. Do you have to have the reciever setup for several inputs for this to occur, or can you only have the Sony using the DVI or Component output to the TV and still get the NTSC and Cable stations?

I am looking into getting one of these babies but I have limited amount of inputs I can use on my TV with my existing DVD/VCR Player which forces me to use DVD via Component and VCR via RCA cables, plus XBox and Satellite...

Thanx

If I already subscribe to Rogers HDTV & rent an hd box,can a 2nd set with a built-in qam cable tuner pick up hd signals without a 2nd box rental?

It doesn't really matter what package you have,
as any digital box has to be specifically authorized
for everything EXCEPT what I have listed on this
unscrambled list. Even if you pay for other stations
on a Rogers box, that means nothing for a off-the-shelf
QAM tuner as all other channels are scrambled,
and they need a Cable Card from the cable company
to get authorization to unscramble them, and as
mentioned Rogers doesn't provide Cable Cards.

Any QAM tuner without a Cable Card slot will never
be able to receive anything but outright unscrambled
channels.

No, that is what he said in the quote which you said. Until Rogers supports Cable Cards (Which I find funny that they have the Rogers analog Barker say you can purcase a TV that has them, yet they dont support them), off the shelf, non Rogers HD boxes wont work. They send a signal to each reciever one by one telling it what it can and can not view. A QAM tuner doesnt work with the HD stations or any of the other stations, unless they are unencrypted...

Daniel,

You stated:"If you want SD, you also need a NTSC tuner - and you have to check whether that's for cable, antenna or both."

The NTSC tuners I am familiar with in the USA only support analog signal not SD which I always thought was digital.

Maybe I am misreading something.

I was responding to someone's question about HDTV tuners, where if you want your HDTV tuner to get any sort of SD signals you need to know whether the tuner in it will get NTSC analog from antenna or cable, or QAM digital SD from cable... or none. "SD" merely refers to anything not HD.

It switches seamlessly between all different station formats. You can use just HDMI or just Component and get everything. Currently I'm using component. I should note that the analog tuner is NOT the best I have seen (unfortunantly I've never seen a OTA HDTV receiver or cable HDTV box that actually did have a good analog tuner). It generally looks better if you don't allow the unit to do the upscaling itself, and instead output analog at 480i.
