The one you own. I own Sony SAT-A4 and A3. They're the best.

Since you don't already own one, I can see your problem.

- decide which channel set you prefer. DISH's channel lineup is different than DirecTV's. You can find both listings on the web.

- If you can install it yourself, I'd suggest going to www.pricewatch.com and searching for "satellite". You may as well get the best price.

- If you're going to need someone to install it, I suggest buying from a local dealer, who can point you to a local installer.

I just finished making the jump from cable to satellite and couldn't be happier with my Hughes system (a couple of E25's).

Here's why:

In looking at all the systems out there, it really boiled down to a "user interface/ease of use" issue for me.

DirtTV's channel groupings are more logical than Dish Network's and that makes wading thur all the channels easier. Addtionally, Dish's choices in recievers are very limited - if you don't like the interface, to bad.

So with DirectTV you can select receivers from Sony, RCA, and Hughes. Each of these have there own take on the interface while the feature sets (Dolby Digital, VCR control, etc.) are about even. The Sony's are a little more pricey than RCA and Hughes, but excessively so.

What I did was visit my friendly Best Buys and GoodGuys stores and just played with each model. I even downloaded the manuals and read up on how they operate and went back to the stores and played some more. Sort of pissed off the sales people after a while, but they got over it:)

After all this, it looked like to me that the Hghes had the most going for it. Seems like they put a lot of thought into their reciever and now that I have used it for a while (and my family), I'm sure they did.
I won't bore you with my opinions of why, but I will suggest that you REALLY check these things out, personally.

Note that a great place to buy a system is DishDirect (www.dishdirect.com), great prices and really good customer support.

I would have to say the Hughes box is by far the best. The channel surf feature is really cool because it does not cut off the channel you are currently on. Anyway, my 2 cents. Oh, the platinum box allows you to chose either coax or toslink for dolby digital----its the only box I've seen with this feature.

Either way you go it will be cheaper than cable and the picture is a lot sharper too.

I got the Dish Network dish (4722) I was wanting AC-3 (a.k.a. digital dolby) sound and didn't want to pay a lot for the dish (Total Cost $54 - 4722 / Dish / all the Cables / and Shipping!!)

Setup the dish myself, not that hard. Bottom line I'm sure you will be happly with either.

The RCA DTC-100 is clearly the best available today, but soon Sony, Hughes and a few others are comming out with better models. Why is it the best, because it can receive all the channels the rest do plus the HDTV channels. While there are just currently just two HDTV channels from DTV you can also get terrestrial Digital broadcast so I get an additional 4 HDTV broadcast off the air. It is also Dolby Digital, so you get the 3-4 regular Dolby Digital from DTV plus the two HDTV ones from DTV and any HDTV channels you get off the air is Dolby Digital as well.

I forgot to mention if your not interested in spending that much for a system you might want to get the Hughes as they are clearly the faster then anything else on the market today.
