Anybody know anything about the upcoming Sony DSS receivers?

What are the advantages/features over the current models (A50/B50)?

This is the first I'd heard of them. What I'd HOPE is they'd improve speed, added discrete on/off etc. If they do, perhaps I'll finally jump on the DSS bandwagon.

I managed to find more info:

1) The units are alledgedly coming out by the end of the month.
2) The units are alledgedly much faster than what is out there today.
3) The units are designed to support the new elliptical dish.

That's all I've been able to find out thus far.

If anybody has further information, please contribute...

Bob,

Could you tell me where you found out the info about the new Sony receivers? I had heard they were coming out with an HD-compatible receiver, the SATM100, or something like that. I've searched all through the Sony web site and there's no info. It sounds like the ones you're describing may be HD-compatible if they're supporting the eliptical dish?

Thanks,

John

I just spoke with a salesman who was at a Sony product showcase in NYC recently, and he saw everything that Sony's coming out with in the next year. Here's the scoop he gave me on Sony's coming DSS systems.

The A55 should hit the stores this month, and it will retail for $349. The main advantage of this is that it will support their new eliptical dish to enable receiving local channels via satellite. However, the receiver itself will not support HD.

Their HD receiver will be in-stores May/June, maybe as late as early Fall. He thought it was called the SATHD1000, or something like that, although I've seen posts calling it the SATM100. Anyway, the receiver will list at $650 and the dish $200.

I'm in the market to dump my existing cable service ASAP, and his advice to me was to wait on the A55 (as opposed to getting an A50 today), and get the eliptical dish. When the HD receiver comes out, if I want to upgrade, I can still use the eliptical dish and move the A55 into a bedroom. Just thought I would share that info in case anyone else is in the same boat.

No, I didn't receive any info on either of these. It really seems to me that it would be advantageous for Sony to make this information available to the public. I understand that there's concern regarding maret strategy and their competition, but if they're already showing product at shows, why not make the info available for the customers so that they can make an informed decision.

Here is some more information. This article has been up at E-Town for about a week. Hope it helps.

Number two in the skies

One category Sony definitely does not dominate is DirecTV Satellite Systems. RCA jumped out of the starting gate with that one in June 1995 and, like Triple-Crown winner Secretariat, looks at the competition which is 30 lengths back. This situation probably will not change in the years ahead. Still Sony is a valiant number two.

Sony will introduce new DirecTV Plus receivers in April. The SAT-B55 ($199) has a single LNB while the SAT-A55 ($299) has a dual LNB and Dolby Digital capability. Sony is selling its satellite system à la carte so you can either buy a classic 18-inch dish or a wider 24-inch dish with dual feedhorns so you can receive signals from multiple satellites. You'll need this if you want to get foreign language packages such as DirecTV Para Todas and local channels if you don't live in the "blessed" areas that can use the older 18-inch dish to pull them in. Sony hinted that a High-Definition DirecTV receiver was in the works for early summer but no specifics were offered.
