I just read that there is going to be a Direct TV/Tivo combination box. The article stated that the combo is good, since the sat received and tivo both must decompress the data. Therefore with 2 separate boxes, the data must decompress then recompress into Tivo then decompress again for viewing. Dose anyone know if this is true and if the combo box would be better?

I don't know the manufacturer yet. Also, Sony is supposedly coming out with a Tivo box.

The combo unit records the stream directly without the need to compress which will give a 100% picture quality (as good as the original Directv broadcast). However, the combo will not have inputs for cable or antenna, so if you don't get locals from Directv, you may be better off with a seperate unit.

I disagree, Sony has unveiled a new unit that will indeed have an input for a VCR. This is a clip from a recent CES speech given by Fujio Nishida of Sony Corp. Full speech available at the following link;

[Link: sel.sony.com]

"Take for example, our latest DIRECTV receiver that comes with a Dolby digital five point one output. Its multi satellite tuner supports both current and local programming options. And to make all of this as seamless as possible, it includes a comprehensive fully integrated on-screen menu. DIRECTV satellite programming and interactive WebTV represent just two of the many new types of digital services that are available today.

However, consumers also need new ways to record and store this content. And this is where Sony’s relationship with TiVO comes in. Today Sony is introducing our new SVR-2000 digital network recorder that features TiVO technology and service. It includes a thirty-gigabyte hard drive that can record up to thirty hours of programming.

For archiving purposes, the SVR-2000 also offers a "one touch" dubbing feature that works with any Sony VCR. And it incorporates Sony’s MPEG-2 encoder for the highest quality digital video possible. The SVR-2000 comes in Wega silver and will be available this spring at a suggested selling price of only $399."

David C., You are confusing two different machines. This thead is about the Directv/TiVo combo unit. You are thinking of the new Sony (SVR 2000) brand stand alone unit. The combo will not have inputs for a second antenna source like cable or roof top. The Sony will but it is not a Directv/TiVo combo. It is simply a Sony brand 30 hour TiVo much like the one Phillips now makes.

I think Mlang may be right. Read the above speech and thought it was the same product, "however" it looks like Sony is jumping on the Phillips bandwagon and is promoting a way to get another 400 dead presidents out of me. I've stated previously, I'm waiting for the 5.1 DD and TiVo combo before buying my third receiver. Somebody please point me the way. Tx, Dennis!

Dennis, the combo unit will output Dolby Digital, will be Directv Plus compatable, and will have a full 2 week on screen guide (current DTV guide is much less). It will not have external jacks for any other source than Directv. No price has been announced and it should be out after mid-year.

Mlang, I'm somewhat confused. I'm interested in a Sony combo DSS/TiVo unit, capable of reproducing 5.1 channel Dolby Digital sound, TiVo or Replay TV abilities and the built in A/B switch. What is the prime function of the SVR 2000? Is there another site where we can see it and learn more. Tx, Dennis.

Dennis, the new combo unit's manufacturer has not been named yet. It may not be a Sony brand. It will record and play back 5.1, it will have all TiVo's functions, but it will not work with your local networks unless you get them through Directv. The main reason for this is price. It is much cheaper to manufacture the unit without the decoder. Also, this is speculation, but I would guess since TiVo and Directv are partners, this will raise local network subscriptions for Directv. The SRV 2000 is a Sont brand 30 hour TiVo just like the one Phillips now sells but at a lower price. I expect the Phillips price will drop to match soon.

Mlang, thanx for the info. I think I'm going to go ahead and upgrade to the Sony with 5.1 output. That is more important to me than the TiVo option. Hell, I get all them channels that do nothing but RERUN anyway, so I don't think recording them is a priority. I can always use my trusty ole' VCR instead of letting it function as a clock and collect dust!

Right now I use an RCA Directv receiver with 5.1 output and a Phillips TiVo. I can record all sat and local cable stations. I have the sat receiver analog going to TiVo and the digital toslink going to my Sony STR-DB930 5.1 receiver. That way if I want to watch one of the few 5.1 programs on satellite in DD, I can. I highly recommend TiVo to everyone. I will be getting the 30 hour Sony TiVo for the theater, and moving the 14 hour Phillips to the bedroom.
