I want to buy a General Instruments cable box instead of paying the rent, but haven't been able to locate a dealer. Any suggestions?

heyyyyy tweakman........try looking in the back of most of the a/v magazines, that are published monthly , i.e., stereo review, video , video review, etc, etc, and u will find a classified section listing all the companies that sell cable boxes direct to consumers, i believe the 3 best are , (cant member' their exact names)the one in omaha nebraska, the one in florida , and the one from maine......the first two have been around for ages; make sure u get the all-in-one box, w/o a separate descrambler, and that the E-prom is wired wide open....for every channel.....good luck billy c

I did a search on the internet(AOL search) earlier this week and they listed quite a few places. Try "cable TV boxes" or "cable descramblers". In one of the FAQ's, they state that it is perfectly legal to own and operate a cable converter, just as it is legal to own and operate your own telephone.

Try http://www.cable-tv-descrambler.com/ and read the posted facts.

Thanks for the info, guys. I have called several of the mail order vendors (and the one you noted, Dennis) and they aren't able to handle a GI box on a digital cable system. I tried my cable help line (there's an oxymoron) and they didn't know if they could sell one, or even if it was legal!

The DCTs on Ebay are not enabled to decode. No cable system I know will authorize an alien DCT (yet)
