I just subscribed to the Discovery HD Theater offered by DISH. I was told I needed to add the Enhanced HD Adapter ($50) to my 6000 in order to receive it. To their credit, they give you this adapter free for a one year subscription.

My question is: Can anyone tell me what this adapter does and does this indicate some sort of transmission standards change?

The new module allows Dish to use 8PSK modulation instead of the QPSK modulation currently in use. 8PSK will get more channels on fewer transponders. This is part of the phasing in of 8PSK. QPSK is not going away any time soon though as all the current channels and STBs use it.
