Has anyone had any experience with the new HDTV's that have built in Direct TV receivers? I am looking into getting one, it seems they are all $8,000+ right now...

How far have you looked? I've found that none of them actually exist yet. The only set top box I've even found is the RCA...

RCA, Proscan will probably be the some of 1st. Panasonic, Sony & Toshiba also showed units at the CES show (all are projection TV's). The price will be starting around 5000 to 6000 depending on the size. RCA will also have at 38" 16:9 tibe set soon with the direcTV and HD tuners for about 4000. Hope this helps some. Most units mid to late this year.

I've seen the Hitachi unit with an HDTV feed, and to be quite honest... the picture looks like crap!! I don't know whether the store was feeding the signal correctly or whatever, but it just doesn't get nearly as close as to the Mitsu Diamond HDTV and the Pioneer Elite HDTV upgradeable units. When you start with integrated products such as sat/HD decoder/projection unit all in one... there's a lot of information for that combo unit to process!!! Think of it this way... most people buy audio/video receivers because it's easy and it incorporates a ton of stuff in one box. But as anyone knows, in order to get truly amazing sound, separate components are the way to go (preamp/processor, amp, and tuner all separate pieces). Besides, if you were to get the all inclusive unit... the tv set will not be upgradable... and in these ever so changing times, wouldn't you prefer to get a set that can adapt to any new future changes??? Think about your computer... wouldn't you love to just swap out the old processor and put in a new one for a fraction of the cost??? If you are interested in purchasing a unit with that amount of investment... I would highly highly recommend taking a look at a Mitsu Diamond or Pioneer Elite unit (especially the Pioneer).. You will definitely be suprised by the picture!! If you have any questions... please feel free to email me at anytime and i'll get back with you ASAP!!

John
