Hi I recently bought a Chunghop RM-991 on ali-express. It advertises being able to control TV, VCR, SAT/CBL, A/C, DVD and CD. Not sure who still uses VCR.

Overall, I like the build and the feel of the RC, but as of now, I can only get it to control my aircon and my TV. I have a Philips DVD player, a Marantz amp and a starhub hub-station settop box. I've gone through the various ways of entering codes in the manual of which there are 3: 1) enter the code manually, 2) manual search, 3) auto-search. These fail for the abovementioned devices.

I also tried the learning function because I still have the original remotes, but I want to replace them all with 1 remote: the RM-991. Unfortunately as of now, it doesn't look like this is going to happen, because even the learning feature is not working. Maybe I'm programming it wrong. Does anybody have any hints on how to get my RM-991 to control all these different devices?

Unfortunately, given your mix of components, I'm not sure the RM-991 was the best of choices - the U881 might have been better.

I've got a 991 - somewhere. I'll dig it out, have play with the learning function and get back to you.

The appropriate code is selected in the RM-991 via 1 of 3 methods, A: in which you enter the code, B: in which you search the code manually (the controlled device reacts with volume-up when you get the right code) and C: In which the RM-991 automatically cycles through all the codes (the controlled device turns off when it hits the right code). I've confirmed that these 3 methods do work on the TV, which is one of the things I can control, but not on set-top box, DVD or amplifier, so I think it's a case of the RM-991 just not knowing the code.

In this case, the only recourse is learning, which I am not able to get the RM-991 to do. Hope you can shed some light on that.

It's taken a little while, but having now successfully learnt YouView codes (not listed) to SAT/CBL, and DVD codes to both VCR and CD, I'm hoping your problem is merely one of a slight misinterpretation of the instructions - please don't be offended, it took me several goes to get it right.

Using the DVD device power on/off button as an example...

Key:
LCD screen - TV
Button Press - set

DVD -- set -- CODE -- cursor left or right -- LEARN -- OK -- L_ST -- OK -- IR IN signal transmit icon (bottom right of LCD screen) flashing.

• Place original and 991 remotes facing each other, approximately 3 -5 cms apart.
• Press power on/off button on original remote and hold until the signal transmit icon stops flashing and KEY IN is displayed.
• Press corresponding button (power on/off) on the 991 - the display will revert to IR IN and flashing icon.
• Repeat process for other buttons or to exit...

set -- LEARN -- exit -- DVD

Try it and let me know how you get on.

Your instructions are identical to the instructions in the manual of the RM991. I've followed them through before and I tried it again after reading your message, but still no luck for me with my starhub set-top box.

I thought that perhaps the transmission from the original remote to the RM-991 might have been a little iffy, so I tried it 3 or 4 times at slightly different distance between the remotes during training. In all cases, the RM-991 behaves as you say during the training ("IR-in", press key on original remote, "key-in", press key on RM-991...repeat...) , but after programming, when I try to get the RM-991 to control the set-top box, it does not turn on. The set-top box does react to the RM-991's signal though: A green light on the set-top flashes while I am trying to to turn on with the 991, but after I release the on/off button (on the 991) the green light stops flashing and the set-top remains off. Using the original remote, that green light flashes, but the then the set-top actually turns on.

The IR-light coming from the remotes is detectable by a digital camera (or handphone). I've used my HP to look at the signals coming out of both the 991 and the original remote next to each other. I can see the IR-LED's in both RC's flashing. I notice the 991 has two IR-LED's while the original only has one. I don't think that should be the reason though. They are flashing pretty fast, but my impression is that the 2 sequences of flashes from the 2 RC's are not the same, which would also explain why the 991 is not turning on set-top. *sigh*. not sure what to do now.

Not quite the same - manual step 4 is completely omitted.

As for the Starhub. One suspects there's not much that can be done. The response of the box (flashing green light) suggests a faint possibility of its having received unclean learns, but I would have expected intermittent operation if that were the case.

Someone with a better understanding of IR protocols may be required here, but at the end of the day it is, I'm afraid, only a Chunghop.

Yes, you're right. Step 4 in the manual didn't seem to do anything, so I already omitted it anyway :)

Remote looks really nice and build quality feels good. Just doesn't quite work for me.

Hi there, I set up an alarm clock for 2.45pm. Now I re-programmed it to 7p.m. Now it beeps at 2.45 and 7pm. What shall I do to have it beepping only at 7pm?

Following the manual instructions, I've been experimenting with my 991, but cannot replicate your issue.

Perhaps if you turn off the alarm function, leave it for 24 hours then reprogram the alarm to, say, 07:01pm and see what happens. Failing that I can only suggest a full reset and trying again.

Thanks for the response. I tried reprogramming the way you suggested to no success. I have the same issue with 2 remotes bought from different sellers. Weird, huh?

Weird indeed and suggestive of something having changed, which wouldn't at all surprise me.

Regarding this Remote, which I bought recently, I am also facing LEARNing problems-more specifically, having found and locked my CD code, it works only
as on/off and advance button--when going to the LEARN function and more
specifically to the IR-IN stage it automatically changes my code to its
default for CD 4999 !!!-therefore it learns nothing despite my repeated trials--
Does any body know HOW I shall prevent it from changing my code ???

Just to clarify, are you trying to add learnt codes to the pre-programmed one?

If you mean the code I have found corresponding to my appliance, then yes--the code applicable is 318, but when I reach - In the LEARN function - the stage described above, it automatically shows code 4999--therefore I can not
program other buttons-e.g."Display'
