I am having a terrible time trying to connect my new purchase to my pc. I have a spare 21pin printerport, I have bought the necessary adapter to plug the Remote into it, but it just refuses to start on the edit program. What am I doing wrong? Any help would be appreciated, otherwise I will take it back to the store and buy a DVD player instead! PLEASE HELP.
chris.

PRINTERport? Don't you mean SERIALport?

On the help files that come with the TAKE CONTROL, it states that if you don't have a spare serial port, you can use a 21pin port with an adapter. Is that not a printer port.

Serial ports come in two varieties - 9-pin and 25-pin. Most current systems include only 9-pin, but some systems include one 9-pin (typically used for the mouse) and one 25-pin port.

Parallel & 25-pin serial ports have the same size connector, except serial ports have PINS on the computer's connector, while parallel ports have the SOCKET end.

thanks daniel, you got my mail as well, maybe I should go over to winfiles.com and learn some basic computer skills:-)
Looks like I will have to fit a new serial port.

They're not expensive... you can get basic ones for $10. Make sure when installing it that you correctly set the jumpers (unless it is PNP, in which case you can ignore this) so as not to use the address of the built-in port or your modem, or an IRQ that's already in use. COM1 uses IRQ4, COM2 IRQ3. The default IRQs for COM3 is IRQ4, and for COM4 IRQ3 but that will not work right if you're using them for COM1 or COM2.

You'll probaby want to use IRQ5, IRQ7 or IRQ9... whichever one isn't being used by your sound card.

You can also swap the remote for the modem (asuming you have one) every time you want to program the remote. Or you can get a serial switch. Once it is installed another com port is the best solution though.

Thanks for all the help chaps, until I get a new serial port, I have connected it to the mouse port and am using the numeric keypad as the mouse. This is a slow way of working but it does work.
Thanks again for all your help.

Daniel,

Serial cards used to be cheap, like $10.00.
They are now $30-$70 dollars (even over the net).
Depending on ISA vs PCI.
I guess it's supply and demand. Only a couple companies offer them these days Boca being one.

Chris,

If your machine is old enough that you plug the mouse in the serial port you very likely have 2 serial ports. Most likely one 9 pin and one 25 pin as desribed by daniel above.

And if your machine is new enough you´ve got a PS/2 mouse port. (small and round looks like a svhs port) You can buy a PS/2-serial adapter or buy a PS/2 mouse. Be prepared that the those adapters doesn´t work with all mice.

Good luck. /Anders
