Hello All, I have a RadioShack RF remote ([Link: radioshack.com]) controlling all my components, TV, VCR, DVD but for some reason, when it comes to controlling my satellite receiver, the remote becomes defiant. I have to press on the buttons about 5 times to change channels. Would any of you know what can be the cause of this problem? thanks in advance.

Is there a IR repeater near the front of sat's IR sensor, so it might be controlled by a vcr, dvr(tivo),or even the 2117's baseunit itself? It might be bombarding it with IR signals, preventing any others from getting through.

Are you trying to control the SAT using the RF feature or directly from the remote?

If you're using RF, are you using the IR blaster that comes with this remote, or do you just have the base unit positioned in front of your gear.

Whether you're using the IR blaster or the base unit, do you have them positioned close enough to the SAT unit?

I have a tape Deck, Sat receiver and VCR with the IR repeater sitting on top of all three. what gets me is that all units work fine except the sat receiver. what do you guys think? I am using the remote with RF feature. since its behind glass, IR signals dont get thru, so Im using RF for everything else, I am assuming that its automatically doing this to the Sat as well. (???)

IR signals go through glass, that's why the doors on most cabinets are glass.

Anyway, what's the order of the three stacked devices? Have you tried moving the SAT box to the top of the stack? Some devices require stronger signals than others.

Have you also tried using the base unit itself? Is there somewhere you could position it so that it's facing the stack of devices?

yeah, the IR signals do go thru glass, but I use it to control music receiver when Im in a different room, Anyways, I will try to move around the components, I have the Tape Deck on the bottom, Sat receiver next and the VCR with the IR repeater on top of all. I will move around components, I hope that will take care of the problem. As far as some receivers needing a stronger signal, I was under the impression that RF signals took care of that? thanks again!

The RF signal just sends the data from the remote to the command center, which then converts it back into an IR signal, which gets emitted from the center and also sent through the IR blaster.

As you're not using the command center for this purpose, all of the IR signal is coming from that one little IR-LED at the end of the IR blaster cable. Seeing as how you have it positioned at the top of the stack, I'm surprised that the unit at the bottom of the stack can see the signal at all.

Another thing you could try is picking up a dual head IR blaster!

Interestingly enough, UN-plugging the IR repeater, I was able to change the channels with no problem, Im still working on it. Very strange!

The reason the tape deck and vcr weren't effected, are they don't have any repeating commands, like ch up and ch down. All their commands use a single blast.

now the IR repeater has a plug and wire with a small sensor. I have positioned this right by the components. Im wondering if I have placed this remote and its IR repeater where they are suppose to. I am a BIG time rookie....sorry folks!

ok, lets see if I have this right. The remote is not working on the satellite receiver because too many IR signals are coming in from the Radio Shack RF remote? Too many signals coming from the IR repeater? How can I use the RF feature and still be able to control ALL components including satellite receiver? thanks...

take the controller box out of the cabinet and put it on the coffee table or whereever. The IR signals from it will go thru the glass and should operate all your devices. The RF from the remote will get transmitted from anywhere in the house (apartment or whatever) be picked up by the controller and pass along Ir to your devices. The IR from the controller will also need fairly unimpeded "line of sight" to all your devices so don't put it behind a plant or something.
The remote (2117) also sends IR so while your actually in the room in front of the components don't worry so much about "aiming" at the controller, just "aim" at the devices, as usual.

Angel1,

I'm looking for an ir extender to control multiple products inside a cabinet. This radio shack product looks like what I need. How does the receiver get the info to the various devices? Do you have the receiver inside the cabinet with the "command eye" facing the ir receiver in the equipment? Or is it a hardware from the receiver tot he various equipment?
